Rom 8:9-11

But you are not controlled by your sinful nature. You are controlled by the Spirit if you have the Spirit of God living in you. (And remember that those who do not have the Spirit of Christ living in them do not belong to him at all.) 10 And Christ lives within you, so even though your body will die because of sin, the Spirit gives you life* because you have been made right with God.

NLT

One of the ways you can be sure to make the rapture of the saints is when you have the Holy Spirit living inside you because ‘The Spirit is God's guarantee that he will give us the inheritance he promised and that he has purchased us to be his own people. He did this so we would praise and glorify him’- (Eph 1:14 NLT)

I used to believe that all who are born again have the Holy Spirit living inside them even though they sometimes walk in the flesh but I have come to realize that those who have the Holy spirit living in them will have to be controlled by the Holy spirit. So when a Christian is walking in the flesh he does not have the Holy Spirit living in him at that moment and it will be unfortunate for such a one if the rapture happened then. At the point you do not have the Spirit of God living in you by walking in the flesh, you have taken yourself away from the lordship and ownership of Jesus Christ and these are the only times a Christian can be attacked. When you walk in the spirit you will constantly obey God.

Go into today filled with a determination and the power to always stay filled with the Holy Spirit.

WALKING IN THE SPIRIT: The Renewed Mind

image

Rom 8:7-8

the sinful mind f is hostile to God. It does not submit to God's law, nor can it do so. 8 Those controlled by the sinful nature cannot please God.

NIV

Because we were all born with a sinful nature, it is only natural for our minds to be sinful and walk contrary to the way of God.

The sinful man is the natural product of the unregenerated man; the man who is not yet born again. This mind cannot please God.

The renewed mind is a product of a regenerated spirit that God has given everyone who is truly born again. This comes to be when such a one choses to walk in the spirit and not in the flesh. Walking in the flesh also means letting your feelings dictate your actions in life. We see in Rom 12:2 that we should be transformed by the renewing of our minds this simply put says that you need to change the way you think. Stop a self centered thought pattern and begin to think the way God wants. The following are highlights of this new style of thinking:

Rom 12:9-13:1

Let love be without hypocrisy. Abhor what is evil; cling to what is good. 10 Be devoted to one another in brotherly love; give preference to one another in honor; 11 not lagging behind in diligence, fervent in spirit, serving the Lord; 12 rejoicing in hope, persevering in tribulation, devoted to prayer, 13 contributing to the needs of the saints, practicing hospitality. 14 Bless those who persecute you; bless and curse not. 15 Rejoice with those who rejoice, and weep with those who weep. 16 Be of the same mind toward one another; do not be haughty in mind, but associate with the lowly. Do not be wise in your own estimation. 17 Never pay back evil for evil to anyone. Respect what is right in the sight of all men. 18 If possible, so far as it depends on you, be at peace with all men. 19 Never take your own revenge, beloved, but leave room for the wrath of God, for it is written, "Vengeance is Mine, I will repay," says the Lord. 20 "But if your enemy is hungry, feed him, and if he is thirsty, give him a drink; for in so doing you will heap burning coals upon his head." 21 Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.

WALKING IN THE SPIRIT: Your Spirit and Your Mind

image

Listen to Audio

Rom 8:6

Now the mind of the flesh [which is sense and reason without the Holy Spirit] is death [death that v comprises all the miseries arising from sin, both here and hereafter]. But the mind of the [Holy] Spirit is life and [soul] peace [both now and forever].

AMP

Rom 8:6-8

If our minds are ruled by our desires, we will die. But if our minds are ruled by the Spirit, we will have life and peace. 7 Our desires fight against God, because they do not and cannot obey God's laws. 8 If we follow our desires, we cannot please God.

There is therefore now no reason for you to trust in the arm of flesh to save you but to depend solely on the Holy Spirit who quickens your spirit. This is the reason why you should walk in the spirit and not in the flesh. This means that your work with God is not based on the feelings of your body or your mind but it is based on the feelings of your spirit which is faith.

How then do you differentiate faith from just wishful thinking and the product of your mind. Faith is spiritual and not physical or mental. When you are filled with the Holy Spirit, He quickens your spirit and thereby gives your spirit a voice through which it communicates to you in your mind. How then do you distinguish this voice from the voice of your mind?

You will realize that your mind is very active and your thoughts are based on what you know, how you feel, what you want, what you like, what you dislike, where you want to be etc. You will discover that there is one common factor in all the things your mind processes, the common factor is ‘you’. The thoughts of the mind which is inspired by the flesh is all about you, it is all about me, me and how this relates to me or because of me, or because I am involved, or because of how I feel about this. The center and reality of this realm(your mind) is you.

The thoughts of the spirit are quite different. The voice of your regenerated spirit always reflects the mind of the Holy spirit who indwells you. And all this voice says are things that are centered on God. God is the one to feel happy, God is the one to be pleased, God is the one to be heard; in this realm it’s all about God.

WALKING IN THE SPIRIT: Your Spirit

CEV

One of the reasons we fast is because we want to weaken the grip of the flesh over the total man. You are comprised of a spirit, a soul and a body. When you walk in the spirit, what you are doing is walking in the part of you that identifies with the Holy spirit; the part of you that bears witness with the Spirit of God. Because God is spirit, it is not possible for you to use your flesh or physical body to commune or effectively communicate with Him except He becomes flesh. The eyes of the flesh sees only physical things likes the bright sun, a round football etc., but one thing I want you to know today is that you also have the eyes of your spirit. This is the part of you that ought to see and help you participate in the spiritual realm . The spiritual world is said to be more powerful and said to control this physical world. We are not going to discuss today why that is the case by why God has chosen to reveal himself to us through our spirits. Remember that the first Adam was said in  1 Cor 15:45  to be a living being:

Thus it is written, The first man Adam became a living being (an individual personality); the last Adam (Christ) became a life-giving Spirit [restoring the dead to life]. [Gen 2:7.]

AMP

Since the last Adam is a quickening spirit, the part of you that He quickens is your spirit. The part of you that God regenerated is your spirit.

How to know if you are walking in the Spirit

Rom 8:5-6

For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit.

6 For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.

KJV

We know that the key to spiritual victory is walking in the spirit because as we may know, the bible says to walk in the spirit so that we will not gratify the lusts of the flesh. The greatest thing we have to overcome and need to overcome in order to have a successful Christian life is sin. Most sins are because of lust and God’s remedy for this is a spirit led life.

One of the ways to know you are walking in the spirit is that you do not set your mind on the things of the flesh. This means that the most important things to you are not things that can perish, they are not things of this world- they are spiritual things-

When your mind is becoming set on earthly or vain things, it is an indication that you are not walking in the spirit.

What Grace Does

Rom 8:3-4

For what the Law could not do, weak as it was through the flesh, God did: sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and as an offering for sin, He condemned sin in the flesh, 4 in order that the requirement of the Law might be fulfilled in us, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit.

NASB

Grace works in us to the end that the requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us. You see, all that the law was meant to accomplish in the life of the keepers was righteousness. The law was unable to accomplish this not because it was weak in itself but because human beings were unable to keep the law in its entirety due to the weakness of the flesh.

What God has now done is to give us the empowerment from inside; within our spirits to be righteous without having to follow the rules and regulations of the law even though at the end all the deeds that our inward nature will produce will not present any form of contradiction to the law, for against these(the fruit of the spirit), there is no law( see Gal 5:23)
