Matthew 20:11,13
When they received it, they began to complain against the landowner…
And the landowner replied to one of them, ‘Friend, I am not treating you unfairly. Didn’t you agree with me to work for the standard wage? Take what is yours and go. I want to give to this last man the same as I gave to you. [NET]
People have asked me what exactly this parable in Matthew 20:1-15 means. I have decided to use today’s meditation to examine it.
In the parable, a man hired workers to work for him and agreed to pay them standard wages: he hired some at the beginning of the day and kept hiring others till one hour before pay time. At the end of the day, everyone earned the same wage. Those who worked all day felt cheated because the workers who worked for just one hour were paid the same as them.
This parable illustrates how the kingdom of God has freely come to we the Gentiles who were outside God’s covenant. For thousands of years, our forefathers were deep in idol worship while the Israelites were already worshiping God, yet today, we get to be partakers of God’s grace and be joint heirs of the kingdom with Christ; we have the same opportunity as the Jews to inherit God’s kingdom and blessings. Many Jews in the early church found this difficult to understand. This is a mystery that God concealed from the foundation of the world (see Eph 3:4-6). God used the Jewish race to preserve a culture through which Jesus could come. After Jesus came, He opened the door of salvation to every human race.
Go into today thanking God for making you a partaker of His eternal kingdom.
Prayer: thank you Lord for dying to save the entire Human race, please help me do my part in letting people know of you. Amen.
