Act 27:35
And when he had thus spoken, he took bread, and gave thanks to God
in presence of them all: and when he had broken it, he began to eat. [KJV]
When you sit down to eat, dont just shut
your eyes momentarily and mutter words unintelligibly like many do thinking to
have prayed, but rather give thanks well. Develop the culture of making an
unfeigned prayer to God at every opportunity to pray, especially during the so
often deemed 'casual prayers' like blessing food and bedtime prayers.
Having food to eat is partaking of God's
bounty and goodness, therefore be grateful to God. To bless means to give
thanks or to pray for a blessing. In blessing our food, we give proper
gratitude to God for His provision and pray that it may nourish our bodies.
It makes no difference whether you are
alone or not, being watched or not, give thanks all the same. Our prayers over
food when served in public should not be made concealingly in order to avoid
shame. Paul was in full view of those who were not Christians, but he made
proper acknowledgment of God, expressed his gratitude for His mercy, and was
neither afraid nor ashamed to avow his dependence on Him.
Christ, who is our example
took delight in giving thanks and blessing food, thus making ordinary meals
become special (see Mat 14:17-20). In the same vein, by giving thanks and
blessing food, we can make an inadequate meal become sufficient and an imminent
food poisoning become an edible nourishment (see 2Kings 4: 39-41 and Mt 16:18).
Today, give thanks well to
God for the food he has given you and bless it that it may nourish your body.
