Jer 29:7
And seek the peace of the city whither I have caused you to be carried away captives, and pray unto the LORD for it: for in the peace thereof shall ye have peace. [KJV]
This scripture was God's counsel to the Isrealites when they were exiled to Babylon. And it was very important, because they would be there for seventy years, so their welfare all those years would be tied to the welfare of the nation Babylon.
Just as important as this admonition was in those days, so it is in our present day. Yes, we are not of this world, but we are in the world. We are legal citizens and residents of our nation or country. And by that, we are bound by the rules and obligations of the country. Being a Christian doesn’t make us outlaws. 1Pe 2:13 says, be subject for the Lord's sake to every human institution, whether it be to the emperor as supreme. And just as we submit to the government of our nation, we are also to concern ourselves with the welfare of the nation.
The Bible says in the peace of the nation we are in, we would have peace. That’s true, because if a nation is at war, the heat also would have an effect on the Christians in the nation. Now, by being citizens of heaven (see Phil 3:20) we ought to leverage on that superior citizenship to be a blessing to the nation we are dwelling in.
Knowing that our all powerful father would hear us when we call, we shouldn’t just sit back until things become worse in our country. But, rather at all times, even when all seems to be well, we should pray for our country. We must take our stand and pray. We must push back the agenda of darkness always.
Go into today deciding to intensify your prayers for your country.
