Why Grace?

John 1:14[NET]
14 Now the Word became flesh and took up residence among us. We saw his glory - the glory of the one and only, full of grace and truth, who came from the Father.

Grace is defined as unmerited favor. It is also defined as God's empowerment to help you walk in His nature of righteousness and glory. It is in this light that today's Bible text describes Jesus as being full of grace and truth.

In the Old Testament, the law was given to instill righteousness. In the New Testament, grace is given through Christ because the law could not produce righteousness. Grace came to empower us bring forth fruits of righteousness that glorify the Father (see John 15:16).

Why is righteousness so important?

God's throne is established on the foundation of righteousness, justice and truth (see Psa 89:40, Heb 1:8-9). His plan for man is for us to extend His kingdom to this physical side of eternity. In order for this to be possible, we have to be righteous according to God's nature. Our righteousness before God is revealed in our dealings with fellow human beings made in God's image.

Righteousness is a gift we have received from God through faith in Christ Jesus. It is a nature that makes it possible for us to be Holy. But we have to choose to walk in this nature and no more in the old nature of the flesh (see Rom 8:13). This is what it means to walk in grace, it means depending on the supply of the Spirit and not in your power or might.

We are saved by grace. Grace is the instrument through which Christ saves us from our sins. That is why it is an aberration to receive grace and then go back to what it saved you from (see Rom 6:1).

Go into today asking the Lord to fill your heart with faith for increased grace.
