John 14:13-14 (NKJV)
13 And whatever you ask in My name, that I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. 14 If you ask anything in My name, I will do it.

1 John 5:14 (NET)
And this is the confidence that we have before him: that whenever we ask anything according to his will, he hears us.

Indeed, when you obey the commands of the Lord, it is proof that you believe and abide in Him, and whatsoever you ask in His name will be done for you (see John 15:7). Note that 'whatsoever' lies only within the context of God's will.

In John 14:13-14, Jesus was talking to His disciples and to believers. His disciples are those who abide in Him. They naturally walk in His will and ask according to His will.

There is the temptation for those who have received grace to walk in His righteousness to begin to trust in their fruits [of righteousness] as the reason they should receive from the Lord. This is a temptation that we must always resist whenever we come requesting anything from the Lord. We must always remember that the reason we receive from the Lord is because of His goodness and stature, not because of our works.

Go into today knowing that the way to pray in the name of Jesus is by praying with the understanding that our prayers will be answered because of Christ Jesus, not because of our works.
