Psalms 18:6 (NKJV)
In my distress I called upon the Lord, And cried out to my God; He heard my voice from His temple, And my cry came before Him, even to His ears.

When you examine the story of king Saul and king David, it is easy to come to the conclusion that Saul wasn’t even as sinful as David when looking at it from a human perspective, but David was the man after God’s heart even though he made some bogus mistakes.

All Saul ever did to lose the kingdom was to disobey a simple instruction from the Lord (so it seems). And he was killed because he consulted a witch in order to know what to do. He also tried to kill David even though he knew that the anointing of God was upon David. Saul’s biggest problem was that he did not really have a heart after God.

If you read the Psalm above, you would see that David usually referred to God as His God. He had a personal relationship with the Lord and he loved the Lord (see Psalm 116:1, Psalm 31:23). He cared about how the Lord felt and would not consciously do something that he knew would displease the Lord. He repented anytime he found that he was wrong.

But Saul never really had a heart for God. He was simply a religious fellow. In 1 Samuel 15:30, after judgment was proclaimed against Saul, he did not repent but was more interested in the way he was perceived by the people. Notice that he referred to God as Samuel’s God and not as his God.

There are lessons we can learn from the life of Saul: You cannot be a people pleaser and a God pleaser at the same time. You cannot please God if your heart is far away from him.

Go into today remembering that you can be ever closer to the Lord God and do more exploits(Dan 11:32). Loving the Lord with all your heart is the secret.
Prayer: Ask the Lord to help you love Him with all your heart.
