2 Corinthians 6:14 (NET)
Do not become partners with those who do not believe, for what partnership is there between righteousness and lawlessness, or what fellowship does light have with darkness?
(Also read 1 Cor 15:33, James 4:4)

Question: I read the devotional of 4th December. Does it mean that God does not want us as believers to do business with unbelievers?

Biodun and Brain were both very intelligent [food] scientists. They both worked on recipes and formulas to better preserve food without degrading it in any way. Their formulas and recipes were groundbreaking ones that could revolutionize the global food market. Biodun was the one with the ideas and inspirations from God. Brian was simply the one who helped out in the laboratory to do proper analyst, tests, and simulations. But they were both equal business partners, with equal shares, and they planned to make money off these innovations together.

Unknown to Biodun, Brain had other plans of his own. He had secretly started publishing their work on certain foreign journals and had started making plans to sell their work to a certain multinational company.

There was also a certain Christian man who partnered with an unbeliever in starting a school. They were both close friends and did not do any elaborate partnership paperwork. They labored together and collectively used all their savings to get that school on its feet. At the point the school started becoming really successful, the Christian partner died under very mysterious circumstances, and the unbeliever took over the school without giving a dime to the family of his partner.

This is what God’s word says: do not be unequally yoked together with unbelievers. We usually quote this Bible verse when talking about marriage, but it is not limited to marriage.

As a believer, it is not wise to start a business with an unbeliever. This doesn’t mean you cannot do business with them, but it means you cannot have a partnership of equal shares with an unbeliever.

Of course, you can patronize the goods and services of an unbeliever (1 Cor 10:25). You can even market goods/services manufactured by an unbeliever, but it is not wise for a sheep to partner with a wolf in equally owning a business. There are many things that wolves will do that we are not permitted to do. And we cannot expect God’s covering when we blatantly disobey His instruction.
Ask the Lord to help you always walk in the light of His word (Psalm 119:11, 109).
