1 Corinthians 1:12-14 (NET)
Now I mean this, that each of you is saying, “I am with Paul,” or “I am with Apollos,” or “I am with Cephas,” or “I am with Christ.” Is Christ divided? Paul wasn’t crucified for you, was he? Or were you in fact baptized in the name of Paul? I thank God that I did not baptize any of you except Crispus and Gaius

Further Reading: Acts 18:1-19

A certain missionary took the gospel to a community. He didn’t meet opposition, but he observed that people were not responding to his message because there was a certain mystical ‘prophet’ in that community that the people followed. This prophet was not saved but was one who walked in the way of Balaam.

The missionary preached and preached and many were convicted but did not come forward to receive and confess The Lord Jesus. After the missionary labored in that community for weeks, the mystical ‘prophet’ was convicted and accepted the Lord Jesus and was baptized. When the people in the community heard that their ‘prophet’ had accepted the gospel and was baptized, many of them too believed in Jesus and were baptized.

When Paul first took the gospel to Corinth, he stayed there for 18 months, and many of the people in the city believed and were baptized after Crispus the leader of the synagogue believed (see Acts 18:8). Apart from Crispus and some other few people who were Paul’s first converts, Paul did not baptize but only preached. Others did the baptizing.

This was Paul's biggest point when he rebuked the Corinthians for their divisions. He did not baptize many of them so they couldn't claim that he baptized them in his name. Since they were all baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus, the only name that should be their tag should be Christ, not Paul, Peter or Apollos.

Go into today remembering that to be denominationally minded is a sign of spiritual immaturity (see 1 Cor 3:1-3).

1 Corinthians 1:10-11 (NET)
I urge you, brothers and sisters, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, to agree together, to end your divisions, and to be united by the same mind and purpose.
For members of Chloe’s household have made it clear to me, my brothers and sisters, that there are quarrels among you.

Because the Corinthian church grew so rapidly, many of the new members were still babes in the faith. At the time Paul wrote his first letter to them, the church was now dominated by such new believers. Many of them were still carnal, and they manifested works of the flesh like party spirit, quarrels, divisions and the likes.

Paul’s first letter to them was a wakeup call, and it brought many of them to repentance. He even had to encourage them in his second letter to them because many of them were so sorrowful and broken (see 2 Cor 2: 4-11) when they realized through his first letter that they were not walking in a way fitting for those who would inherit the kingdom of God (see 1 Cor 6:9-10).

One major sign that showed that the Corinthian believers were true believers (even though many of them were still carnal) was the way they responded to the word of God when Paul sent it to them in his first letter. They repented and changed their ways. They did not rationalize and give excuses for their faults.

Today, many people claim to believers, and many are still in the process of growing into maturity. One way to discern those who have been truly born again is the way they respond to God’s word. If a person has total disregard for God’s word when it opposes his conduct, it may be a sign that he is not yet truly born again [of water (the word) and the Spirit].

1 Corinthians 1:8-9 (NET)
He will also strengthen you to the end, so that you will be blameless on the day of our Lord Jesus Christ. God is faithful, by whom you were called into fellowship with his son, Jesus Christ our Lord.

Chinedu had led a lot of people to the Lord. But he observed that a number of them that were no longer with him got entangled in the world again. He went to a certain city and met one of them who was even a fellowship leader when they were together on campus. He was shocked to see that this brother was now living with his girlfriend in sin and shame. He could not understand how someone who was once so close to the Lord could fall so far from grace. He was now deeply concerned about his other disciples who were no more in direct contact with him.

Apostle Paul also had this concern for many of the people who had come to the Lord through him. He knew that there were wolves in sheep's clothing who would seek to mislead and devour them (see Acts 20:29). At a time, he wrote to the Thessalonians and said he really wanted to get in touch with them because he didn’t want his labor with them to be in vain (1 Thess 3:5).

As a person who’s had the privilege of leading people to the Lord, I understand the burden and concern Apostle Paul had for his disciples. Even the Lord Jesus had this same concern for His disciples when He prayed for them and asked the Father to preserve them from the evil one (see John 17:15).

Go into today knowing that Just like Jesus handed over His disciples to the care of The Father, we too are to hand over our disciples to the Lord and be rest assured that he would strengthen them to the end. We do this by constantly praying for them and asking the Lord to preserve them.

1 Corinthians 1:6-7 (NET)
Just as the testimony about Christ has been confirmed among you - so that you do not lack any spiritual gift as you wait for the revelation of our Lord Jesus Christ.

One thing was common to the churches in Paul’s time; they all waited for the revelation of our Lord Jesus. They were expecting and hoping that the Lord would come during their lifetime because they understood that His coming would reveal their indescribable glory and power on this earth.

When the Lord returns, we will be transformed into His glorious nature, and these vile bodies of ours will be changed into the likeness of His glorious body (see Phil 3:21). He will come with great power and will subject all things to His authority. Every knee will bow to Him (see Rom 14:11-12). We will rule and reign with Him and will judge the world and even angels (1 Cor 6:2-3). This is the destiny of the believer. We are part of God’s kingdom, and we will be rewarded according to our faithfulness to His call (see Matt 16:27, Rev 12:12).

When believers live without this consciousness, they are bound to live faithless and weak lives that cannot truly draw people to the knowledge of the truth. But when believers live with a consciousness of the Lord’s appearing and remember that they would give an account of their stewardship here, they would live as pilgrims on assignment in this world and would conquer the world as agents of a higher kingdom.

Go into today remembering that as believers, our affection must be set on things above because we are citizens of heaven where the Lord Jesus Christ lives. And we are eagerly waiting for Him to return (see Phil 3:20).

1 Corinthians 1:4-5 (DARBY)
I thank my God always about you, in respect of the grace of God given to you in Christ Jesus; that in everything ye have been enriched in him, in all word [of doctrine], and all knowledge

Amaka was suffering from demonic affliction and fear even though she was a believer. Her Pastor had prayed for her and delivered her several times, but the issues kept coming back. Her pastor knew that the only way she could be free indeed was if she received her freedom through the knowledge of the Truth (see John 8:32, John 14:16, John 8:36). Because of this, her pastor gave her books and sermons to listen to, but she wouldn’t read the books nor listen to the sermons.

She became totally free when she heeded her pastor's advice and started reading faith building books and paying attention to increasing her faith through the ministry of the word.

I have seen Christians who are very careful with their conduct suffer demonic affliction and defeat, and I have seen Christians who like the Corinthians, are not as careful with their conduct, but they enjoy spiritual liberty and are enriched through grace because they have been properly taught and grounded in the word of faith. God neither wants us to live carelessly nor does He want us to suffer unnecessary affliction. But many times, His people suffer because of lack of knowledge (Hosea 4:6). This knowledge is the knowledge of His word.

Go into today remembering that prayers are very important and indispensable to spiritual growth. But so is the knowledge of the truth (which is God’s word). Prayer is like a gun and the word is like the bullets. You need to get your gun properly loaded.

1 Corinthians 1:4-5 (DARBY)
I thank my God always about you, in respect of the grace of God given to you in Christ Jesus; that in everything ye have been enriched in him, in all word [of doctrine], and all knowledge

The church in Corinth was indeed enriched in all things. Concerning spiritual gifts, they were not lacking in any and were behind no one (1 Cor 1:7). They had abundant demonstrations of the power of God in their midst, and because of this, they enjoyed great growth and admiration from the people of the city. Concerning physical and material prosperity, they had become rich through the power of grace (see 1 Cor 4:8). These Paul acknowledged and was glad for, but was concerned for them not to be carried away by these and ignore the weightier matters of the kingdom.

The secret of the Corinthian church’s enrichment was their enrichment in doctrine and knowledge, and Apostle Paul pointed this out (see Bible text above). They had skilled teachers like Apollos, and because of them, they were enriched in doctrine and knew how to appropriate the riches of Christ through faith. For faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God (Rom 10:17).

Whenever you see Christians who are walking in the grace and the manifestation of the riches and liberty of Christ, it is always because they have been properly taught in that regard. Christians who are not given to doctrine and learning are usually impoverished, oppressed, and wanting in many things. This is not the will of God.

Go into today remembering that Christians are disciples and disciples are students. We are students of the Word, and we never graduate from the school of the Spirit.
Ask the Lord to help you give yourself to the ministry of the word and to prayer (see Acts 6:4).

1 Corinthians 1:3 (NET)
Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ!

A certain missionary took the gospel to a West African village. The first household he visited, they greeted him warmly and offered him some food and water because they perceived he was coming from a far journey. He told them the reason why he came to their village and shared the gospel with them. They knew there was something glorious about him, so their father wanted him to stay with them in their house. Everyone in that household eventually accepted the Lord Jesus and became born again. They later observed that since the time the missionary stayed in their house, everything started going well with them. Their farm became unusually fruitful, and their livestock became very productive. They also observed that their sickly children were now healthy and strong. All these good things happened to them because of the peace of Christ that rested upon their household through the missionary.

Jesus told his disciples that if they went preaching and found a home deserving, they should let their peace rest upon that home, but if the home is not deserving, they should let their peace return to them (see Matt 10:13).

In the world today, peace is understood to be the absence of war. But the peace that Jesus gives is far more than that (John 14:27). It is a spiritual force that causes everything to work properly. It is a spiritual empowerment that ensures well-being, health, and prosperity. It has the ability to garrison the soul of a person against anxiety and fears (see Phil 4:7).

It is worthy of note that Grace was mentioned before peace in Paul’s salutation to the Corinthians. This is because peace is made available because of grace. It is unmerited and has been fully paid for by Christ Jesus.
Go into today asking the Lord to fill your life with His peace.

1 Corinthians 1:1-2 (NKJV)
Paul, called to be an apostle of Jesus Christ through the will of God, and Sosthenes our brother,
To the church of God which is at Corinth, to those who are sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be saints, with all who in every place call on the name of Jesus Christ our Lord, both theirs and ours

The book of 1 Corinthians is a letter written by Paul to the church in Corinth. It was most likely dictated by Paul but written down by Sosthenes. Sosthenes was once the ruler of the synagogue in Corinth (Acts 18:17) and was most likely an important facilitator in Paul’s apostolic ministry to the Corinthians.

Corinth was a major city in the southern part of Greece. Paul took the gospel to them as an apostle of the Lord Jesus. Many believed and became part of the church, but like many churches, they had their peculiar issues and temptations. Paul wrote this letter to them to encourage them and address some of these issues.

Notice that in 1 Cor 1:2, Paul refers to the Christians in Corinth as those who are sanctified in Christ Jesus and called to be saints. In the world today, people believe that saints are most holy people who represented God well in their generation. Well, that is what we all have been called to become in the New Testament Church. It is important that we know this and believe that we are those called, sanctified and empowered to be living witnesses of our Lord Jesus, set free from the corruption of this world, and whose lives radiate the supernatural [miracle working] power of God.

Go into today thanking God for calling you.
Prayer: ask that God will empower you to live the life that bears witness to His power and glory.

Proverbs 26:2 NLT
Like a fluttering sparrow or a darting swallow, an undeserved curse will not land on its intended victim.

After Ade became a Christian, his life turned around and he became successful in life more than all his brothers, who still practiced pagan, ancestral worship. This made some of them very envious and bitter to the point of concocting and placing charms outside his house, in the hopes that it kills him.

However long they waited, nothing happened to him and soon after, all those involved in the scheme fell ill one by one, suffering that which they thought would happen to him. In shame, they called for a family meeting where they confessed and begged Ade for forgiveness.

Many still harbor fear even after salvation, especially of curses from sorcery or divination instead of walking in boldness and authority. They even refuse to visit certain places or act and talk like a Christian before certain people for fear of them being cursed.

Christ Jesus, blotted out every record of our sins and consequently redeemed us also from all their associated curses when He shed His blood on the cross, ensuring that we shouldn't live any longer in fear of them or of any new pronouncements made against us because, in Him, we have divine immunity (Gen 12:3, Gal 3:13-14, Col 2:14).

Therefore, for a believer who is deeply rooted in God and dwells constantly in His presence, no curse is permitted to reign over his life, as it must first go through God and Christ before it gets to him. We know from God's Word that this will definitely fail (Num 23:19-24, Isa 54:17, Zec 2:8, Col 3:3).

Go into today knowing that as you hide your life in Christ Jesus, you shall never be a victim, as no divination, curse or spell is permitted to rest over your life. Your immunity is assured.

Romans 8:13 (NLT)
For if you live by its dictates, you will die. But if through the power of the Spirit you put to death the deeds of your sinful nature, you will live.

When Osas got to the university, he came in contact with some preachers that made him believe that his conduct didn’t matter as long as he had once believed in Jesus. He started listening to these teachers and now despised his former preachers as ‘teachers of the law’. He continued to follow these teachers and was now emboldened to continue in certain sins that he had struggled with in the past.

A terrible quarrel broke out between Osas and his choir director because the Choir director stole his girlfriend. He was grieved by the fellowship because they took sides with the choir director against him. Because of this grief in his heart, he stopped going to church and started questioning Christianity. After some time, he became an atheist because there was no more faith in his heart unto salvation.

If a believer continues to listen to such preachers as the ones Osas met on campus, they will give him doctrines to appease his mind while he is violating his conscience with sin. Unknown to him, his faith is being gradually eroded because sin is a hostile force against faith (see Rom 14:23). Brazenly continuing in any sin (and constantly violating the conscience) can lead to a shipwreck of faith (see 1 Tim 1:19). This is when there is no more faith left in the heart unto salvation.
This was what Judas Iscariot was toiling with when he was following Jesus but was unrepentantly continuing in his sin of stealing (John 12:6). This was the trap the devil planned for Peter because denying Jesus not once, but thrice, would have been enough blows to his conscience to cause his faith to fail. But the Lord interceded for him (see Luke 22:31).

Go into today remembering that rebelliously walking in any known sin is the way people have a shipwreck of their faith.

Hebrews 10:38 (KJV)
Now the just shall live by faith: but if any man draw back, my soul shall have no pleasure in him.

Denying Jesus even in the face of death was something that the apostles and early Christians would not do because they understood the meaning of faith. As Jews, the apostles understood that faith in Jesus meant faithfulness to Him no matter what. Faith was not a once and for all thing, it was an enduring reality that controlled every area of their lives.

In the Hebrew language, the word translated to mean faith can also be translated to mean faithfulness. In that language, faithfulness and faith is the same word. This has a lot to say about the nature of the Christian faith.

When Apostle Paul talks about justification by faith, we must realize that there is always an undertone of faithfulness because as a Jew, Paul could not understand how one would have faith and not be loyal, obedient and faithful to the one in whom he has faith.

Anyone who truly has faith in God will be faithful to God. He will have no other gods beside Him. He will obey Him and ever seek to more perfectly walk in His will.

When people try to divorce faith in God from commitment and faithfulness to God, they are not talking about the faith of our Lord Jesus Christ, they are talking about another kind of faith, and that faith cannot save anyone.

Go into today remembering that faith in the Lord will make you faithful to Him and not ashamed of Him in this crooked world.
prayer: Ask the Lord to fill your heart with His faith.

Habakkuk 2:3-4 (NET)
For the message is a witness to what is decreed; it gives reliable testimony about how matters will turn out. Even if the message is not fulfilled right away, wait patiently; for it will certainly come to pass - it will not arrive late.
Look, the one whose desires are not upright will faint from exhaustion, but the person of integrity will live because of his faithfulness.

Amara was in charge of the accounts department in her office. Even though at that time she really needed money, she refused to cooperate with her boss to manipulate some figures and make extra cash. She simply told him that cooperating with him would be acting against her faith.

Doing things that fight your faith is the definition of sinning (see Rom 14:23). Sin is antithetical to faith, that’s why continuing in any sin and defiling conscience would ultimately lead to a shipwreck of faith (see 1 Tim 1:19).

Amara did not compromise because she had the hope of our calling as the anchor for her soul. Our faith is based on hope. This hope is the hope of the eternal kingdom of God and glory that He has promised us when the Lord appears. Hebrews 11:1 defines faith as the substance of things hoped for. There must be hope for there to be faith.

Even though it may appear as if the coming of the Lord (which will bring our hope to fruition) tarries, we wait patiently, for it will certainly come to pass.

Go into today longing for the Lord’s appearing. This longing produces a life of faith and faithfulness in doing the Lord’s assignment. Those who live like this will be sure to wear a crown on that day (see 2 Tim 4:8). They will not suffer loss (see 1 Cor 3:15).

Look, the one whose desires are not upright will faint from exhaustion, but the person of integrity will live because of his faithfulness.

When Amara believed in the LORD Jesus, she was made to understand that because she believed, she was going to have eternal life, experience the resurrection of the dead and have the same kind of glorious body that Jesus has right now (Phil 3:21). She was made to understand that our glorious bodies will reveal our real nature as Sons of God (see Rom 8:23 in AMP). These bodies cannot grow old or fall sick; they will walk in the divine nature as naturally as we walk in the physical nature now.

Amara was also made to understand that because of the resurrection, she would sit with Christ in glory and judge the world, and even angels (1 Cor 6:2-3). She understood that she was going to inherit everything that belongs to God because she is a joint heir with Christ. Because of these things she understood, trials and temptations could not make her compromise her faith. She knew what was at stake.

The gospel message is not only good news about salvation from sin and condemnation; it is also good news about our glorious eternal destiny in God through Christ Jesus. In 1 Corinthians 15, we see Apostle Paul explain the gospel message he preached, and a great part of that chapter was about the resurrection of the dead-our glorious eternal destiny.

Go into today remembering that the gospel brings hope to those who receive it and causes them to live by faith [and faithfulness] because of this hope. Read Col 1:23.

James 5:16b (NLT)
…The earnest prayer of a righteous person has great power and produces wonderful results.

Dare observed that the Holy Spirit moved him to pray and each time he prayed he was empowered in the inner man. His spirit was energized and the power of his flesh to control him was diminished.

But he also observed that if he continually neglected the nudging to pray, his flesh would become powerful again and his spirit relatively weak. He decided that he was now going to be committed to prayer like never before. He observed that the more committed he was to prayer and the ministry of the word, he became spiritually stable and strong.

We are instructed time and time again by the Lord and through His apostles to be prayerful (see Luke 18:1, Col 4:2, 1 Thes 5:17, Rom 12:22, Eph 6:18). This is because it is through prayer that we access the power of God we need for life and godliness. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous person makes much power available (James 5:16). ‘Prayerless’ Christians are powerless Christians.

Jesus told His disciples to pray so that they would not fall into temptation (Mark 14:38). The power to overcome temptation is made available when we pray.

Go into today remembering that the way to stand is by ‘praying always with all prayer and supplication in the spirit’ (Ephesians 6:18). Ask the Lord to help you to this end.

1 Corinthians 6:20 (NET)
For you were bought at a price. Therefore glorify God with your body.

When Dare realized what it really meant to be a believer in the Lord Jesus, his slavery to sin was broken.

He had attended church all his life, but he knew he was still a slave to sin. When for the first time he learned that believing in the Lord Jesus meant accepting Christ Jesus as his Lord, he understood that this meant that his life now belonged to Christ and he could no longer live the way he liked but now had to submit to the will of Christ. When he realized and understood this, he could now receive power from the Holy Spirit. This power enabled him to overcome the dominion of sin in his life.

He also observed that because of this power, he was no more afraid of the devil and his demons. He now had the authority to withstand the forces of darkness and overcome.

Being a believer doesn’t just mean accepting that Jesus is Lord, it means receiving His Lordship over your life. When this happens, the Holy Spirit can now empower you to live above the power of the flesh.

It is only by the Holy Spirit that we can put to death the works of the flesh (see Rom 8:13) and this can only happen when we have truly accepted the Lordship of Jesus over our lives.

Go into today remembering that the degree to which you are submitted to the Lord is the degree to which you will have spiritual authority. It is only those who submit to the LORD that will be able to resist the devil and he will flee from them (see James 4:7).

Matthew 7:21 (KJV)
Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.

Today, there are over two billion people that call Jesus Lord. But what does it really mean for Jesus to be the Lord of a person?

If Jesus is your Lord, it means He is the one who has authority over you and He is the owner of your life. It means He now controls your life through His word and His Spirit.

Anyone who calls Jesus his Lord and means it must do His will, which is the same as the will of His father in heaven.

Anyone who calls Jesus his Lord, but does not do His will is merely deceiving himself and will be in for a rude shock on judgment day.

The Holy Spirit is the one who administers the authority of Christ within us. He reminds us of God's word and empowers us to obey it. Those who truly belong to Christ are those who are led by the Spirit of God ‘for all who are led by the Spirit of God are the sons of God’.

Go into today thanking God for the privilege to be filled with the Holy Spirit. Ask the Lord to help you always obey His word and His leading.

Psalm 80:18 (KJV)
So will not we go back from thee: quicken us, and we will call upon thy name.

After realizing that his flesh would always fight against his prayer life, Uchenna decided that regardless of the way he felt each night when it was time to pray, he was going to pray for at least one hour each day. He noticed that if he tried to pray in his room, his bed was a real distraction, and he would be tempted to lie down, and eventually sleep off, so he decided he would leave the comfort of his room and go to a place where it would be difficult for him to sleep.

The first day Uchenna left his room to pray at night, he started by asking the Lord to quicken him to pray. He did this because he had come to discover that the Holy Spirit is the one who quickens us to call upon His name. That day, he prayed for one and a half hours because he really enjoyed the presence of the Lord and the quickening of the Holy Spirit.

One of the reasons some people find it difficult to pray is because they do not enjoy the presence of God in their prayer life. Prayer is meant to be the high point of our daily communion with the Lord. There is a sweetness of the communion of the Holy Spirit that is intensified when we truly pray in the spirit, it is called the sweet communion of the Holy Spirit (see 2 Cor 13:14). If for any reason, this communion affected, prayer becomes a dry and unpleasant chore.

It is because of the quickening of the Holy Spirit that we would be able to pray without ceasing.
Go into today asking the Lord to quicken you to pray.

Galatians 5:17 (NET)
For the flesh has desires that are opposed to the Spirit, and the Spirit has desires that are opposed to the flesh, for these are in opposition to each other, so that you cannot do what you want.

Uchenna decided that he was going to start praying from 11pm to 12pm every day. He would normally be awake around this time watching movies, but as soon as he decided to stop watching movies and devote this time to prayer, he observed that a very sweet sleep would come over him and he would find it difficult to pray for even 20 minutes. He did not know that this was warfare between the flesh and the spirit. Prayer is spiritual, and the flesh would fight it because 'the flesh wars against the spirit and the spirit against the flesh'.

If you are a believer in Christ, there are two things the devil would try at all costs to hinder you from doing daily because doing them would render him increasingly irrelevant in your life and world. The devil would try at all costs to hinder you from taking quality time daily to pray fervently and commune with the Lord. He would also try at all costs to hinder you from the ministry of the word; this could be hindrances and distractions from studying the Bible, hindrances from going to places where you would hear the living word of God, etc. But because the devil is not omnipotent, we have the power to resist him and do God’s will. The only people in this world that can resist the devil are those who are submitted to the Lordship of Christ Jesus (see James 4:7).

Go into today remembering that as long as you are submitting to doing the will of Christ, you have the authority to resist the devil and he will flee from you.
Prayer: Lord, please help me be always submitted to your will.

1 Corinthians 14:2 (NKJV)
For he who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God, for no one understands him; however, in the spirit he speaks mysteries.

One of the reasons why Femi stopped praying in tongues before he experienced spiritual dryness was because ever since he started praying in tongues, he had never heard himself speak in any human language, so he sometimes wondered if his tongues were really genuine. But after the experience he had, he decided that whether he spoke in a language or not, he was going to continue to pray in tongues.

When you pray in tongues and people hear you speak in their own native language, this is a sign and wonder from God. The Miracle is performed in their hearing process. That is why in Acts 2:5, there were people from every nation under heaven, yet each person heard the disciples speaking in their own native languages (see Acts 2:6,8). Acts 2 didn’t say the disciples spoke in different languages, but it says each person heard them in his own language.

From today’s Bible verse, we can see that in reality, when a person prays in tongues, no one understands him, however, in the spirit he speaks… In the flesh, it may appear that he isn’t really speaking but uttering nonsense or simply groaning, but in the spirit, he speaks mysteries.

When God causes people to begin to understand what you are saying in tongues, it is a sign and a wonder and not usually the general rule. Even when a person is not praying to God, but giving the people a message from the Lord in tongues, he speaks mysteries and no one understands him, that is why in that case, there is the need for an interpreter.

1 Corinthians 14:14-15 (KJV)
For if I pray in an unknown tongue, my spirit prayeth, but my understanding is unfruitful. What is it then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also: I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the understanding also.

Femi told his friend about how his spiritual life had grown since he got baptized in the Holy Spirit with the evidence of speaking in tongues. His friend was excited about his spiritual growth, but was skeptical about the 'praying in tongues' part. His friend said if he prayed in tongues, he needed an interpreter. Femi tried to explain to his friend that since he was praying to God and not giving people a message from God, he didn't need an interpreter. But his friend partially convinced him that he wasn't praying correctly by praying in tongues the way he did.

Because of this conversation, Femi decided that he was going to try praying only in his understanding henceforth. The first day he tried praying this way, he ended up praying for only 15minutes instead of the one hour he normally spent. He felt so dry and empty in his spirit.

After trying this method for three weeks, he faced a challenge that required him to walk in great faith, but he found that he was now afraid of things he didn’t fear before. This was an indicator to him that his spirit was lean and lacking power. It became clear to him that his decision to no more pray in tongues was a manipulation of darkness to keep him spiritually weak and ineffective. God delivered him from that delusion.

Giving people a message in tongues is different from praying in tongues [to God]. The one needs an interpreter or it would be fruitless for the people, but the other does not need an interpreter because God understands what is being said.

Go into today remembering that praying in tongues is praying in the spirit. This builds you up and fills you with spiritual might and power (1 Cor 14:4, Jude 1:20).

Acts 1:8 (NKJV)
But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth."

The day Femi got baptized in the Holy Ghost, he prayed in the Spirit for three hours straight. As a result, he felt so much power in his soul that there was no more fear in his heart. This power also made him free from every slavery to sin.

As the days passed, it appeared as if this power within him was no more with the same intensity. He wondered why this was happening. The next time he went to fellowship, he prayed fervently for about 30 minutes, and he felt the boldness and power once again. This was how he knew that the way to stay in the Spirit and power of God is to be prayerful and holy.

The power to become sons of God is supplied to us by the indwelling Holy Spirit (John 1:12). The Holy Spirit is only given to those who have received Christ Jesus as their Lord.

In today’s Bible text, we can see that Jesus did not allow His disciples to be His witnesses until the Holy Ghost came upon them to empower them.

When a person is baptized with the Holy Ghost, it is usually accompanied by praying in the Spirit and sometimes by prophesying. People who intend to live Spirit-filled lives must be people who take their cue from that first day they were baptized. They must be people who continue to pray always in the Spirit.

Go into today asking the Lord to fill you with the Holy Ghost and with power so that you will represent Him well.

James 1:3-4 (NKJV)
…Knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience.
But let patience have its perfect work, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing.

During the 13 years Funke waited to have a child, her faith was tried and greatly strengthened. Because of this, she had become a person of great esteem in heaven. She had a robust relationship with the Lord and could stand in the gap for people as a territorial priest before God. After her trial was over, she always wondered if she would have been so close to the Lord if she didn’t face that trial.

Father Abraham is known today as the father of faith because of his patience in waiting on God for Isaac, and his willingness to sacrifice Isaac because he trusted God that much. If Abraham did not patiently trust God for so long to receive Isaac, he most likely would not be known today as the father of faith. His seeming suffering was working for him an eternal weight of glory.

In James 1:2-4, God says we should count it all joy when we face trials and temptations because they help to strengthen our faith and make us perfect (if we faint not). Do not let the devil deceive you to think that because of your trials you are under a curse and you need to start running from pillar to post. As long as you know you are with God and living under His authority in obedience, you have nothing to fear because, after your night of weeping, the daybreak of laughter and glory will come (Psalm 30:5).

Go into today thanking God and remembering that in all things, God works for the good of those who love Him (Rom 8:28-NIV).

Hebrews 10:38 (KJV)
38 Now the just shall live by faith: but if any man draw back, my soul shall have no pleasure in him.

Fayemi was drowning spiritually and he knew it. He could no longer pray like before, and when he did, he wasn’t sure his prayers had power.

It wasn’t always like this. There was a time in his life that he had great faith, but his faith eroded with time because he was walking in disobedience.

Abraham was a man of great faith. This faith made him obey the Lord every step of the way. That is what faith does.

Faith and obedience are two sides of the same coin. No one can say he has faith in God (or he has the faith of God) without being obedient to God. Those who truly have faith in the Lord Jesus would obey His commandments (see Luke 6:46-49). Those who constantly walk in disobedience do this to the detriment of their faith. A good example of disobedience is being unequally yoked together with unbelievers (see 2 Cor 6:14).

One of the ways you will know if your faith is dying is through your prayer life. It takes faith to pray in the spirit, but when this becomes increasingly difficult, it is an indication that you need [spiritual] healing.

Go into today remembering that you cannot live by faith and live in disobedience to the word of the Lord.

Ask the Lord to deliver you from every disobedience, and empower you to always live in obedience to His will.

Deuteronomy 20:8 (MSG)
The officers will then continue, “And is there a man here who is wavering in resolve and afraid? Let him go home right now so that he doesn’t infect his fellows with his timidity and cowardly spirit.”

There were whispers and sighing by several people in a church when a boy with sight disability still couldn't see after he had been prayed for. Unfazed by this noise, at the end of the service, the minister sent everyone away except a few of his close associates and the boy's mother. Standing firm with them in prayer, the Spirit of God revealed to him that the boy needed a creative miracle instead of a healing because the retina of the disabled eye was removed in a surgery previously. This time, they spoke that the boy should receive a new retina, and in a miraculous moment, he recovered his sight.

From the scriptures, we learn from Joshua, Caleb, Gideon, and from our Lord Jesus, that the display of fear and noises of doubt coming from others can constitute spiritual barriers which must be cancelled if we desire to see victory (Num 14:6-9, Judg 6:2-6, Mk 5:36-42, Mk 9:19-25).

Fear is highly contagious and it directly opposes our faith. Like faith, it also comes from what we allow ourselves to hear, see, or feel. The way to handle fear is by canceling it with the Word of God.

Therefore, in making our demands, especially during intercession, we must always ensure that we maintain our focus on God's Word and be bold enough to send away all noisy doubters, till we are all of one mind (Acts 4:31-32).

Go into today knowing that you have been given the Spirit of sonship, power, boldness and sound mind, with which you can counter every fear and walk in victory always (2 Tim 1:7, Rom 8:15).

IRON SHARPENS IRON

Proverbs 27:17 (NKJV)
As iron sharpens iron, So a man sharpens the countenance of his friend.

Many things were happening in Felix's life and he was beginning to feel overwhelmed. He couldn't pray like before, and he could sense his spiritual strength waning.

He decided to visit his friend Emmanuel. He spent two hours in Emmanuel's house and they spent the time trying to catch up on current happenings. As their manner was, they also discussed the Word of God.

As Felix left Emmanuel’s house, he felt strengthened in his spirit. He could now pray and enjoy the presence of God like he once did. This was because the time he spent with his friend was a time of spiritual sharpening.

When iron knives or swords rub on each other, they sharpen each other in the process. But when Iron continually rubs on wood, it becomes blunt.

When two believers mingle with each other, because they are of the same kind of spiritual material, they sharpen each other. But when a believer communes with an unbeliever for long, he will become spiritually blunt. Bluntness manifests as ineffectiveness in prayers, unnecessary fears, faithlessness and lowered spiritual strength, etc.

In Isaiah 41:15, we see that God makes us into sharp threshing instruments having teeth. We stay sharp by keeping the right company.

Go into today remembering that having fellowship with friends who fear the Lord strengthens and sharpens you. Ask the Lord to deliver you from unequal yokes with unbelievers.

Prayer: If you don't have friends who sharpen you, ask the Lord to send such friends your way.

James 1:3-4 (NKJV)
…Knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience.
But let patience have its perfect work, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing.

For seven years, Funke had prayed and trusted God to give her the fruit of the womb. But she was still expecting a miracle to happen. By this time, some of her ‘friends’ and family members were suggesting that she was not taking matters seriously enough. They told her about one ‘baba’ who solved several women’s problem. But Funke insisted that she was going to wait for the Lord and not turn to another god. (This ‘Baba’ was a sorcerer).

Many times, it occurred to Funke that she was going to die childless, but she kept on encouraging herself in the Lord. The Lord kept showing her signs and tokens to remind her that He was with her.

After being married for thirteen years, she and her husband welcomed their first child into this world. At the point she conceived, she was no more expecting to conceive because she had already reached menopause and had concluded that ‘even if He slay me, I will still trust Him’. This was the threshold of faith that produced the miracle she had been praying for.

She didn’t quickly notice that all the time of waiting on the Lord and remaining steadfast had worked for her an eternal weight of glory. Even though she didn’t have biological children, she had many children in the Lord and had discipled tens of girls, many of whom she brought out of the streets.

Something about faith that we cannot afford to forget is that faith and patience usually work together. One of the biggest signs of true faith in the heart of a believer is the willingness to be patient. It is during the period of our patience that our faith is being purified and made strong.

Go into today remembering that true faith is willing to wait on God and not turn to compromises.

Prayer: Ask the Lord to help you walk steadfastly in faith all the days of your life.
