2 Kings 5:13-14 (NET) Naaman’s servants went to him and said, “My father, if the prophet had told you to do some great thing, would you not have done it? How much more, then, when he tells you, ‘Wash and be cleansed’!” 14 So he went down and dipped himself in the Jordan seven times, as the man of God had told him, and his flesh was restored and became clean like that of a young boy.
Are you familiar with the story of Naaman? That great Syrian general who was plagued with leprosy but at the instance of his slave-girl was told that the God of Israel could heal him and after consulting with his King was referred to the King of Israel and ultimately to Elisha the prophet. Do remember his seeming dilemma when all he was instructed to do was to dip 7 times in the Jordan River? He thought to himself, is it for a lack of fitting and befitting bodies of water in Syria that I came here? Do I need a bath or a healing? However, when he gave in to the voice of reason from his servants and did as the Prophet had instructed, he came out whole.
Many times, believers want to trust God for his intervention (for healing, for direction, etc.), but they have a fixed expectation of how it is supposed to play out. They would be willing to trust God for bread for as long as the bakery remains open. However, God is committed to keeping his word not to meeting our fanciful self-generated expectations. In receiving from the Lord, it is important to listen to the instructions of the Lord, for the believer, it might come as a leading, a perception, or an inspiration. It would be a mistake to simply weigh such instructions or leading by mere reason, trying to extrapolate the connection between the leading and the expected divine intervention.
I mean, water does not routinely turn to wine just by conveyance, yet the disciples obeyed Jesus and took the jars of water to the chairman of the feast who received from them water-turned-wine. The miracle occurred as obedience was activated. Same thing when Jesus commanded them to distribute the bread and fish among the multitude, the miracle occurred as obedience was activated. What about the 10 lepers? It was as they left, in obedience to Jesus’ instruction, to show themselves to the priest, that they discovered that they were clean at which point the one returned to express thanks.
The key is this, the Spirit of God within the believer administrates the things of Christ in the believers’ lives, He will never lead him contrary to the revealed will and word of God. When you are impressed in your spirit to pray for a person, simply pray; when you are led to give to someone, just give; when you perceive the Lord asking you to preach to a total stranger, buck up and do it… It is as we obey that the miraculous intervention of God unfolds. Take that dip, do it promptly, walk in the leading of the Holy Spirit. Let the words of Mary re-echo in your heart always, “Whatever he says to you, do” (See John 2:5).
Go into today determined to experience the miraculous as you hear, listen and follow the leading of the Holy Spirit.
