Living by the Spirit

Broadcast 4109

Romans 8:8-9 (NET): "Those who are in the flesh cannot please God. You, however, are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God lives in you. Now if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, this person does not belong to him."

Dave had been a believer for over seven years when he realized that he was not truly living according to the Spirit but was instead living in the flesh. Even though he had accepted Christ as his Lord and Savior and was actively involved in the church, his values, motives, and character hadn't changed much from when he was an unbeliever. He was still proud and self-centered, often justifying his un-Christlike behavior by comparing himself to other Christians who he felt were worse than him.

The turning point came when Dave had a dream that revealed he was not living in a manner that pleased the Lord.

Unfortunately, many believers today are like Dave. They are very religious but they do not have the character and spirit of Christ. Many will say to the Lord on judgment day: we performed miracles in your name, etc. But the Lord will say "Depart from me, you workers of iniquity" (see Matthew 7:22-24).

What does it mean to be "in the flesh"? It means living according to the sinful nature we were born with, which we inherited from Adam our father according to the flesh. This nature is hostile to God and cannot please Him (see Romans 8:7). It enjoys what God hates and despises His ways. This nature is a consequence of rebellion against God's authority and government. Satan and his angels share this nature because they too rebelled against God.

When we believe in the Lord Jesus, we get to be born again with a new nature. This nature is what we inherit from God our Father according to the Spirit. The old man must be crucified, and the new inner man, created in the image of Christ (see Ephesians 4:24), must be allowed to grow and dominate our souls. The old man is called flesh; the new man is called Spirit.

Even though we have the divine nature (Spirit), we cannot walk in it until we crucify the old man and allow the new nature to dominate us.

Go into today remembering that God expects you to walk in His nature now that you are saved. The degree to which we walk in this nature is the degree to which we are fruitful.

Glorify God in your body

1 Corinthians 6:20 (KJV) For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's.

After attending an evangelistic crusade, Dapo accepted Jesus into his life and soon joined a denomination. He found himself among friends who believed that what they do with their bodies did not matter since their spirits have been saved and it is their spirits that will go to heaven and not their bodies. Dapo continued this way and soon discovered that he couldn’t live the victorious life promised in the Bible. He met another brother in his workplace who was respected by everyone, including their boss. Dapo saw that there is a higher life this brother had and sincerely coveted this kind of life because he knew he did not walk in it.

After many years of trying, Dapo eventually consulted this other brother who simply told him that, "God wants to dwell in your body also". After hearing this, Dapo exclaimed, "So He also wants my body!" He cut off from those friends and started following the doctrine of Christ (which establishes the dominion of God over people). That was when his progress started.

Like Dapo, you may not know that God also wants control of your body. He really wants to possess your body too, just the way He has possession of your spirit.

If what you do with your body does not glorify God, it is impossible for the world to know that you’re a child of God. This is why Paul wrote to us in our text that we must glorify God not only in our spirit but also in our body.

Go into today knowing that if God must reach out to the unbelieving world through you, what your spirit has received from His Spirit must be displayed in your bodily actions and conduct.

Pray this way: Father, I give myself to you, spirit, soul, and body. Be glorified in my body like you are in my spirit.

Life in the Spirit

Broadcast 4107

Watch today's Vidoe: streamglobe.org/vid4107

Romans 7:5 (KJV) "For when we were in the flesh, the motions of sins, which were by the law, did work in our members to bring forth fruit unto death."

The law operates within the domain of the mind and is ruled by the knowledge of good and evil. In the old creation, a man under the law of God is far better than a man ruled by his flesh and native impulses or any other human code. However, when the new creation came, it became an aberration for people to still cling to a life ruled by the law when they can live lives ruled by the Spirit of life.

Because we are still in a body of flesh, an understanding of the law can guide us in knowing what the Spirit would never lead us to do. But our lives and hope of salvation should never be based on our ability to keep certain rules and regulations. They should be based on our relationship with the Spirit of the living God. The guarantee of our salvation is the Holy Spirit, not the law (see Ephesians 1:14).

Those who subscribed to the law only found their minds trained to be more sophisticated and refined in their approach to sin. Because of the flesh, the law did not have the power to kill sin in our hearts; it only helped to institutionalize it. As a result, even though we are sinners, we might feel self-righteous because we have convinced ourselves that we have not broken all of God's laws.

Go into today remembering that the biggest hindrance to a life of grace is dependence on our ability to keep God's laws as the basis of our justification.

Prayer: Lord, help me to live in the Spirit and bring forth fruits unto God (Romans 7:4).

John 9:4 (KJV) "I must work the works of him that sent me, while it is day: the night cometh, when no man can work."

The first persons that taught me the way of the Lord were my parents. They were young and full of strength, and it seemed they would live forever, but they both have left this world to be with the Lord, neither of them living to be seventy years old. My mom always sang me the poem, ‘tic, tic, tic says the clock, tic, tic, tic, what you have to do, do quick.' The poem wasn’t just for me; it was for them also because, if there were things they couldn’t do in their lifetime, they never could do those things again.

Jesus answered in John 11:9, "Are there not twelve hours in the day? If any man walk in the day, he stumbleth not, because he seeth the light of this world."

There is a time allotted to you, and to this time are attached duties or assignments collectively referred to as purpose. You are here for a purpose, whether you are aware of it or not, and the time allotted to you is just enough for your assignment, such that any time wasted is a great waste.

Note that once your time is up, you’ll be called home whether or not you’ve finished your assignment. It is very important that you spend your time wisely doing the things that are assigned to you. You must also know that we will all stand before God to give an account of how we spent our time (see 2 Corinthians 5:10).

Now that you still have some time, don’t you think you should find out what you’re here for and begin to do it? Remember, whether you do what you’re here for or not, when your time is up, you’ll leave the earth.

Go into today making up your mind not to live life anyhow. This, you will do by finding out why you’re here and fulfilling it.

Being Strong in the Lord

Psalms 31:24 (NET) Be strong and confident, all you who wait on the Lord!

When Henry was in the hospital recovering from open heart surgery, the doctors and nurses all had this to say about him: "He is really strong." They said this not because of his physical strength, but because of his willpower and determination to recover against all odds. He was determined to get well despite the many complications that arose. He was always positive and didn't let depression and sorrow overshadow him. He eventually got well and was discharged.

One attribute that should always be found in the lives of those who wait on the Lord is strength and confidence. Strength is the ability not to be discouraged when others are. It is the spirit that makes you see the possibilities when others are complaining and quitting. Those who wait on the Lord cannot afford to be complainers and quitters. They are optimistic and hopeful because the one in whom they trust is the Lord of the heavens and the earth.

Being strong and confident in life always go together. We are admonished to be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might. Being strong in the Lord means never giving up or complaining. It means never letting circumstances control our mood. Strong people don't let circumstances control their mood; they control circumstances with their faith and courage.

Go into today remembering that to be fruitful in waiting on the Lord, you must be strong and confident. Replace every complaint in your heart with thanksgiving and praise to the Lord.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, please help me to be strong and confident as I navigate this journey of life. Help me to see Your goodness in the land of the living. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Saved to Serve God

1 Corinthians 6:20 (KJV): "For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's."

There are those who believe that the reason for their salvation is so they could be free from their problems: poverty, oppression, sicknesses, etc. Others believe that it is so they could have power, dominate and rule.

But what do you think is the reason for your salvation?

Jesus came so that we should be saved from our enemies, and from the hand of all that hate us; "That he would grant unto us, that we being delivered out of the hand of our enemies might serve him without fear" (Luke 1:71, 74 KJV).

The above passage shows that salvation itself is freedom from our enemies, but many saved children of God today have spent a lot of their time fighting enemies. Meanwhile, what we should be doing is serving God without fear, in holiness and righteousness all the days of our lives (Luke 1:75 KJV).

The reason you are saved is so that you would glorify God. Because many have not lived by this truth, they fight battles that are already won in Christ.

If you want to live a life free from the fear of enemies, you will have to begin to live your life solely to glorify God. This way, God Himself will become the enemy of your enemies.

Pray this way: Father, I give myself to you--spirit, soul, and body. Let my life always give you glory. In Jesus' name. Amen.

Romans 8:15 (KJV): "For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father."

Many of the children in the neighborhood called Mr. Akande their father because Mr. Akande was truly a father to many of them who had lost their dads in the war. He provided for them and paid their bills even though they were not his biological children. But Mr. Akande and his biological children were really close. When every other child would say Mr. Akande is our father, Henry, his son, would say Mr. Akande is my dad. Mr. Akande didn't necessarily know the voice of all the children in the neighborhood, but he knew the voice of his son and would respond quicker if he heard that voice.

'Abba' is one of the first words a Jewish child utters. It's very much like the word 'Dadda' English-speaking families hear their children say as first words when the child tries to say 'daddy'. Before Jesus, no Jew dared to call God Abba. It was too personal a term with which to refer to God. But Jesus was the first to call God 'Abba' because God was His dad (see Mark 14:36). Today, through faith in Christ Jesus and by the indwelling Holy Spirit, we have that kind of personal relationship with God such that we can call Him Abba or dad.

Those who are led by the Spirit are those who walk in this realm of relationship with their heavenly Father. The thought of today's verse started in Romans 8:1 and down to verse 13 we see that the topic of discussion was walking in the Spirit as opposed to walking in the flesh. We see that those who have the Spirit of God dwelling in them (not just a one-time filling) are those who walk in the Spirit (see Romans 8:9). And now we are seeing that it is those same people (who walk in the Spirit) that have this personal relationship with God as Father.

Go into today remembering that because of the indwelling Holy Spirit, God is your Dad and the relationship you have with God is the most intimate that there is.

Prayer: Holy Father, please fill me with Your Spirit and help me walk in the Spirit and stay filled so that I can walk in the reality of sonship.

Romans 8:15 (NET): "For you did not receive the spirit of slavery leading again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption, by whom we cry, 'Abba, Father."

A child that is not sure of his father's love can never be as close to his loving father as the child that is sure of his father's love.

The Spirit of God whom we have received endears us to God. He is the one who bears witness with our spirits that we are children of God (Romans 8:16).

There is a tendency by the flesh to bring back the old principle of fear in our dealing with God. This is the only principle the flesh understands, one that obeys only because of fear of the consequences. But in the new creation, we obey our Father because we love Him.

Operating in God's kingdom by the old principle of fear limits us greatly in our relationship with our heavenly Father. But if a believer walks in the flesh, his relationship with God will have to be governed by fear because that is the only language the flesh understands. Not obeying God still has fearful eternal consequences that should be dreaded, but a man who walks in the Spirit has gone beyond that level of fear and entered into the realm of love that facilitates a growing relationship leading to transformation into God's divine nature and eternal kingdom might and greatness, not merely an escape from eternal damnation.

God wants us to have a growing relationship with Him, one where we continue to know Him more and more until the perfect day. This is only possible when we are rested in the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God. All of this is facilitated by the communion of the Holy Spirit who sheds the love of God abroad in our hearts and administers the grace we need for life and godliness.

Go into today remembering that grace and peace are multiplied in your life through the growing knowledge of God and of our Lord Jesus Christ (See 2 Peter 1:2). This knowledge is fostered by a loving fellowship with God our Father.

Confession: God loves me, and there's nothing the devil can do about it. I walk in this love and grow daily. Amen.

Prayer: Lord, help me walk above the dominion of the flesh and fear, and enter into the realm of your love through the dominion of your Spirit.

Romans 8:16 (NET): "The Spirit himself bears witness to our spirit that we are God’s children."

Benise was a believer who lived a very disciplined life but was also a very miserable believer because she lived in the fear of going to hell and had no assurance of salvation. Because of this fear, other fears found expression in her life, and she was now a slave to fear. She got delivered from the dominion of fear after she heard and meditated on the words of an anointed song that went thus: "I'm no longer a slave to fear, I am a child of God..."

After listening to the song over and over again, she realized that all the fear in her heart was devilish. She sought to be delivered permanently and realized that the answer was in being filled with the Spirit. The infilling of the Spirit takes away fears (see Romans 8:15, 2 Timothy 1:7).

One of the surest signs that a believer is filled with the Spirit is that they will have the assurance of salvation. This assurance takes away the fear of death (both spiritual and physical). It gives us boldness and boosts our faith in receiving from God because we know that He is our heavenly Father who loves us even more than an earthly father loves and cares for his children.

Go into today thanking the Lord for the Holy Spirit that brings assurance of salvation and gives you boldness to walk in your liberty as a child of God.

Prayer: Ask the Lord to deliver you from anything seeking to hinder your devotion to spiritual disciplines that make for a Spirit-filled life.

Romans 8:17 (NET): "And if children, then heirs (namely, heirs of God and also fellow heirs with Christ) – if indeed we suffer with him so we may also be glorified with him."

Just this afternoon, I had a conversation with a young man who said he wouldn't mind waiting to grow old before he lives a life that is fully committed to God. At that point, I knew I had to explain to him the benefits of knowing God from his youth because that is when he still has the strength to serve the Lord--service for which he would be eternally rewarded.

Today's Bible verse reveals that we who believe will be heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ Jesus if indeed we suffer with Him so we may be glorified with Him. There is a dimension of glory that is stored up for all of God's children, but only those servants who put their talents to kingdom advancement use and serve the Lord will attain that height of eternal glory. Salvation [from eternal damnation] is a gift and not a reward. But authority and ranking in the kingdom is a reward for faithfulness to the Lord and obedience to His call (see Luke 19:17, Matthew 16:27, Revelation 22:12).

Eternity is forever and ever, and we should care about our destiny there. Many people will be in the highest levels of God's eternal glory for all eternity because they responded faithfully to the call of God and lived for Him--not shying away from the suffering it may incur on this side of eternity. But many others will not respond to the call. They will choose to live for themselves even though they have believed in the Lord Jesus. Even though many of such people will be saved through their faith in Christ, they will be saved as though through fire and would suffer loss (they would lose their reward--their ordained place of authority and glory in God's eternal kingdom). Read 1 Corinthians 3:13-15.

Go into today remembering that glory and honor are stored up for those who live for Christ--sacrificing all and even suffering for him because of their resolve to fulfill His purpose for sending them into time.

Prayer: Holy Father, please help me live for you and fulfill your purpose for my life. In Jesus' name. Amen.

Not Worthy To Be Compared

Broadcast 4099

Watch today's Vidoe: streamglobe.org/vid4099
Romans 8:18 (KJV) For I reckon that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us.

When we contemplate who God is and all He possesses, it is simply too overwhelming for our limited human minds to fully grasp. Yet, we are going to inherit all that belongs to God as heirs through Christ Jesus.

What we know is that we shall be like Him because we shall see Him face to face (1 John 3:2). We shall rule and reign with Him and even judge the angels (see 1 Corinthians 6:3). We shall inherit all things (Revelation 21:7).

Even though we know that it is those who live for Christ and are willing to suffer for Him who will be counted worthy to reign with Him in glory, it is foolishness to think that our suffering for Him can earn us eternal glory. The sufferings of this present time cannot be compared to the glory. If we suffered for Christ to the point of death in a billion lifetimes, it still wouldn't be sufficient to earn the glory that we will receive.

God is not interested in our suffering; He is interested in our faithfulness. It is just that being faithful to Him often requires denial of the flesh and may incur persecution from those still controlled by the prince of this present world, who is an enemy of Christ. As you read this devotional today, many of our brethren in Pakistan, parts of India, and the Middle East are experiencing great persecution because of their faith in Christ. Many in the Middle East are even denied passports so they cannot get visas to flee their countries where they are being persecuted for their faith. Even in certain parts of northern Nigeria today, believers who are qualified for promotion in public service are denied promotion because they are believers. Qualified students are denied admission into government-owned, subsidized tertiary institutions because they have Christian names. We can go on and on, but the point is this: those who do not deny the faith because of worldly pressures are proving that they are faithful in the little, and much more will be given to them (Luke 16:10-12). They will rule and reign with the Lord in the eternal kingdom that is coming to sweep away every other kingdom.

Go into today asking the Lord for the grace to be faithful to Him in the face of pressures.

Prayer: Dear Lord, please help me to be faithful to You until the end. Please help me not to miss my eternal reward by reigning with You in glory on that day. Amen.

Psalm 68:11 (KJV) The Lord gave the word: great was the company of those that published it.

In the Nigerian city where I grew up, there are burial grounds of European missionaries which are now historical sites. These missionaries died and were buried in the land because they came to preach the gospel. Some of these missionaries attended the best universities, but they saw a higher calling and were willing to give their lives for it. Today, many in Africa are believers because of their sacrifice. Many lives have been physically and eternally saved because of their sacrifice. I can still remember how it was a missionary called Mary Slessor whom the Lord used to end the infanticide ritual killing of twins in the southernmost part of Nigeria.

When I look at my generation, I have a great concern in my heart because the emphasis and pursuits of many believers are for vain things. Believers who love their lives too much (and love the world) cannot effectively pass the light of the gospel to the next generation (see John 12:25, Revelation 12:11, 1 John 2:15).

When the gospel was first preached [in Jerusalem], it was by a handful of people who were willing to give it all (both those on the frontline of apostolic missions and those who gave their resources to send them). Today, over two billion people on earth are called Christians, and many millions have come to know the Lord personally. But this didn't happen without a great company of people intentionally committed to spreading God's word.

Even in the 19th century when there was a great missionary movement and many parts of Africa were evangelized, there were still some believers who loved the world too much and didn't want to inconvenience themselves for the gospel. But there were those who considered the Kingdom as the most important thing in their lives. All the believers in that generation are now physically dead, but some of them have crowns and eternal rewards stored up for them (2 Timothy 4:8), while some others would be ashamed before the Lord (1 John 2:28). Even though the people from that generation are no longer in this world, they are still very much alive and conscious. Some are in joy, while others are in eternal sorrow and damnation.

Go into today determined to be among the company of those who publish the word of the Lord in your generation. A life that counts is one committed to spreading The Kingdom.

Prayer: Lord, help me live a life that counts in Your eternal scheme of things. Help me fulfill my part in what You are doing in my generation. Amen.

The Glory that Shall be Revealed 2

Romans 8:20-21 (NET) For the creation was subjected to futility – not willingly but because of God who subjected it – in hope 21 that the creation itself will also be set free from the bondage of decay into the glorious freedom of God’s children.

Henry observed how Caleb literally spoke to things and they responded. One evening, it was raining heavily, and Caleb needed to go out. Henry saw Caleb speak to the rain, and it stopped. Another time, while traveling together, they ran into a terrible pothole. A loud noise came from the right back wheel of the car, and they knew they needed a mechanic. But Caleb spoke to the wheel, and the noise stopped immediately. Henry wondered why things responded to Caleb's words and later realized it was because Caleb understood he was an ambassador of the gospel, and creation responds to the gospel and its true ambassadors.

After the fall of man, God placed a curse on the earth for man's sake, which affected all creation (Genesis 3:17). Man became downgraded because of the fall, and God had to downgrade creation for man's sake. A downgraded man could only survive in a downgraded creation and habitat. But God did this in the hope that one day, after the redemption of man, creation would be set free from the bondage of decay into the glorious freedom of His children.

Creation was downgraded because man was downgraded through sin. When the sons of God enter their glory through the resurrection, creation will also be liberated.

That's why Jesus didn't mince words when He said that the gospel was to be preached to every creature, or to all creation (see Mark 16:15). Jesus could have said 'preach the gospel to everyone,' but He said 'preach the gospel to every creature.' The words He used alluded to creation, not just human beings. The effect of the gospel will bring creation out of the curse of decay, not just human beings. And by the Holy Spirit, who enables us to walk in the first fruits of the power of the age to come, we can control creation just as Jesus did.

Go into today giving thanks for the privilege of being a partaker of God's glorious gospel.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, please empower me to be an agent of Your gospel everywhere I go. Help me to be faithful to the end, in Jesus' name. Amen.

The Glory that Shall be Revealed 1

Romans 8:18-19 (KJV) For I reckon that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us. For the earnest expectation of the creature waiteth for the manifestation of the sons of God.

Have you ever seen a parked car grow newer with time? In this old creation, things grow older, not newer. Things naturally gravitate towards disorder, not order. This is a result of the curse of corruption. However, the glory that will be revealed in us (who believe) is so great that it will lead to the liberation of all creation from the curse of corruption.

The curse of corruption is what causes things to grow old and worn. But when our glory is revealed in the resurrection, all of creation will be set free from this curse (see Romans 8:21).

Ignorance concerning who we are and what we have in Christ is the reason some believers are profane like Esau, trading their priceless eternal inheritance of rewards for temporary trappings of this world.

Go into today remembering that all creation awaits the manifestation of your glory. Even now, by the Spirit, we get to walk in the foretaste of this reality. We are God's light in this dark world (see Isaiah 60:1-2, Matthew 5:16).

Prayer: Ask the Lord to multiply within you the grace to shine His light in this dark world and to live in the hope of His calling.

Led by His voice

John 10:27-28 (NASB) My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me; and I give eternal life to them, and they will never perish; and no one will snatch them out of My hand.

Seyi was disturbed because, as a believer, he didn’t really know the voice of the Lord. This was a significant concern because he understood that recognizing the Lord's voice distinguished the sheep from the goats.

He understood that there were goats and sheep, and while everyone claimed to be a follower of the Lord, those truly led (whose lives are controlled) by the voice of the Lord are His true sheep (see Romans 8:14). He understood that those who follow the Lord's leading will never fall, for He leads them "in the path of righteousness for His name's sake." But how could he be so led without the ability to know or hear the voice of the Lord?

Seyi began praying and fasting about this. One morning, he received enlightenment when he picked up his Bible to read. He realized that these are the words of the Lord. Every word in it was inspired by the Spirit of Christ. Reading and understanding it was the easiest way to hear the voice of the Lord and follow it.

The Lord leads us by His instructions in the Bible. In fact, there is no leading from Him that you can receive in your spirit that will contradict His will as expressed in the Bible.

Go into today remembering that Christians who want to be led by the Lord seek His word. They crave His word like newborn babies crave milk (see 1 Peter 2:2). Read the Bible and get materials to help you better understand the word (get books, download sermons, attend meetings, etc.).

Prayer: Thank you, Lord, for the Bible. Amen.

Keep a Firm Grip

Broadcast 4094

2 Thessalonians 2:15 (NLT) With all these things in mind, dear brothers and sisters, stand firm and keep a strong grip on the teaching we passed on to you both in person and by letter.
In the reality of this 'social media' age, there is a heightened need for acceptance. People want to be liked and fear being different. The world is becoming increasingly intolerant of anyone holding an unpopular view. Those who do not agree with the general consensus are labeled intolerant, phobic, and narrow-minded. In light of this, believers are under pressure to shift grounds and compromise the truth to conform to the demands of an ever-changing world.

However, the word of God commands us to keep a firm grip on the truth. Christian values remain unchanged. Jude 1:3 describes our faith as one that has been handed down once and for all. Keep a firm grip on the truth. Understand that the Christian stance on sexual purity, integrity, and love has not been modified. Hold fast to these truths as revealed in God’s word. As Hebrews 2:1 (ERV) succinctly puts it, "So we must be more careful to follow what we were taught. We must be careful so that we will not be pulled away from the true way."

Prayer: Heavenly Father, please help me build my life according to the culture of your kingdom. Fill me with your Spirit and help me never to cave to the pressures of this world. Amen.

Ephesians 5:18 (KJV) And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit.
A few days ago, I saw a man who was so drunk that he had lost control of his body. He staggered, sang, clapped, and gesticulated as he tried to find his way home. Because that man was drunk with alcohol, it was easy to observe the influence of alcohol over him.

Have you seen a person filled with the Holy Spirit? What did you observe? The fruit of the Spirit, right?

Just as a man under the influence of alcohol loses control of himself, so does a person under the influence of the Holy Spirit. He is unable to respond to the sinful desires of his flesh because he is under a greater influence—the Holy Spirit.

Galatians 5:16 (KJV) reads, "This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh."

If you find yourself easily responding to the sinful desires of the flesh, it is a sign that you are not filled with the Holy Spirit at that moment. The wise thing to do would be to turn to your Heavenly Father and ask Him to fill you again (see Luke 11:11-13).

Having the Holy Spirit dwelling in you is different from being filled with Him. When a cup is filled with water, it has no space left for other things, right? Similarly, when you are filled with the Holy Spirit, you will have no space for the control of the flesh.

Go into today knowing that if you are not filled with the Holy Spirit, the lust of the flesh will fill the vacuum.

Pray like this: Father, help me to be filled with the Holy Spirit always, in Jesus' name, amen.

Faithful in Unrighteous Mammon

Luke 16:11 (KJV) If therefore ye have not been faithful in the unrighteous mammon, who will commit to your trust the true riches?

Ekene worked in his boss’s shop as an apprentice. He often added to the price of the goods sold and stole from his boss to make some extra money. He did this throughout his apprenticeship and was never caught. After finishing his apprenticeship, he started his own business, but he never prospered. Frustrated, he sought help from his pastor. By prophecy, his pastor revealed how he had been an unfaithful apprentice and told him what to do if he wanted his situation to change.

Luke 16:12 (KJV): And if ye have not been faithful in that which is another man's, who shall give you that which is your own?

Before God commits true riches to your hands, He will first test your faithfulness with the unrighteous mammon (money). For Ekene, he had to work under a boss. For you, it may involve managing the finances of a small group such as a church, family, or even your personal earnings—examples include tithing, offering, giving to others, and how you spend money. When you are unfaithful with the little at hand, you will not receive the much that is desired.

Luke 16:10 (KJV): He that is faithful in that which is least is faithful also in much: and he that is unjust in the least is unjust also in much.

If you desire the true riches of the kingdom, you must learn to be faithful in the unrighteous mammon (money). Except you are found trustworthy, God will not entrust you with the riches of His kingdom, which includes earthly wealth.

Go into today knowing that God is willing to give you true riches. However, you must forsake all unrighteous ways of seeking money.

Prayer: Lord, help me walk in Your true riches and live above all limitations. Amen.

The Fear of The Lord

Broadcast 4091
Listen to today's audio: streamglobe.org/aud4091

Philippians 2:12 (KJV) Wherefore, my beloved, as ye have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling.

One of the most painful things is having to deal with believers who have no integrity. Some so-called believers are outright frauds, yet they profess the name of Christ and are even prominent members of large church congregations. Many professing believers now walk unrepentantly in iniquity, claiming they are under grace. What a delusion!

Because of this, the name of our Lord is blasphemed among unbelievers (Romans 2:24). It is becoming harder for people who reason critically to come to the light of Christ because of the filthy shadow cast by lukewarm believers everywhere.

Growing up as a child, I remember that the church in my country was not as wealthy and large as it is today, but it was much more powerful. True conversions, even among the biggest antagonists, were commonplace. The name of the Lord was more revered and honored, even in the media. No comedians dared mention the name of the Lord or make a caricature of His ministers—something that has become too common today.

But things changed along the way, and now everyone feels comfortable in church with unrepentant hearts. The fear of the Lord was skillfully and gradually removed from the Christian creed. Suddenly, believers no longer walked in the fear of the Lord. Foolishness became celebrated in the organized church as politicians known for corruption were given titles in the church. The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom (Proverbs 9:10). To fear the Lord less and less is the beginning of foolishness.

Some argue that believers should not fear the Lord but only have 'reverential awe' because He is our heavenly Father. They claim that today's Bible verse was not properly translated, suggesting we are to work out our salvation with 'reverential awe,' not fear. The problem with this view is that reverential awe does not invoke trembling. But the verse clearly says, "work out your salvation with fear and trembling." Whatever awaits believers who do not obey this command is something that should be terribly feared and dreaded by anyone.

It is time for the fear of God to return to His people everywhere because when God comes to judge the world, judgment will begin at the household of God (1 Peter 4:17). May we not be found wanting. May we not be cast away after laboring in God's house.

Go into today praying with this verse:
1 Corinthians 9:27 (KJV): But I keep under my body, and bring it into subjection: lest that by any means, when I have preached to others, I myself should be a castaway.

Lay Hold On Eternal Life

Hebrews 2:1 (NET): Therefore we must pay closer attention to what we have heard, so that we do not drift away.

Nonye had believed in the Lord since her time on campus, but now it seemed her faith was waning. Years ago, she believed in divine healing, experienced it, and even ministered it to others. However, she was now doubting if she could be healed supernaturally. Determined not to let her faith fade, she decided to "fight the good fight of faith and lay hold on eternal life" (1 Timothy 6:12). She resolved to be more intentional about her spiritual growth.

Nonye took a break and went on a three-day retreat, dedicating her time to prayer and reading faith-building books—the same ones she used to read ten years ago when she was spiritually on fire. During the retreat, her faith was rekindled, and she started walking at a higher level of faith. She became so engrossed in God's Word that she forgot to worry about the disease troubling her. Many days passed, and she realized she was now totally healed.

The kingdom of God allows for a forceful approach, and the determined take it by force (see Matthew 11:12). Often, if believers are not deliberate and intentional about their spiritual growth, they may find their faith waning and themselves being cheated by the devil daily.

Naturally, after we have learned and understood something, we tend to set it aside and move on to the next new thing. However, this is not how the word of faith should be handled. We must pay closer attention to what we have heard before so that it does not slip away (Hebrews 2:1). Every word that has ever become Rhema to you should be your daily bread, not an occasional menu.

Go into today remembering to fight the good fight of faith and lay hold on the realities of your divine (eternal) life daily. Remember that our weapon is the word of God (see Ephesians 6:17).

Prayer: Dear Lord, please help me walk in an increasing measure of Your grace daily. Amen.

Prioritizing God's Word

Hebrews 2:3-4 (KJV) How shall we escape, if we neglect so great salvation; which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed unto us by them that heard him; God also bearing them witness, both with signs and wonders, and with divers miracles, and gifts of the Holy Ghost, according to his own will?

From when he was a child, Julius knew that there was a call of God upon his life to become a minister of the gospel. After receiving the baptism of the Holy Spirit, certain remarkable spiritual gifts became evident in his life. As he gave himself steadfastly to prayer and fasting, these spiritual gifts grew stronger. Unfortunately, Julius did not devote himself much to the ministry of the Word.

When he felt the time had come to launch into ministry, he started prayer meetings and gathered large crowds because of the spectacular spiritual gifts in his life. The ministry was built on his spiritual gifts and not the Word. Because he had no substantial word to teach the people, he was always under pressure to demonstrate spiritual gifts, even when the Spirit was not moving. As a result, he eventually resorted to gimmicks and tricks to meet the expectations of the insatiable crowd.

Julius missed it in ministry because he failed to realize that signs and wonders, miracles, and gifts of the Spirit are given by God as a confirmation of our witness for Christ. Witnesses for Christ bear the message of the gospel accurately.

Signs and wonders are a confirmation by God of the message of the gospel. The message is the priority, not signs and wonders. Ministers who change this order will inevitably find themselves in the kind of mess that Julius found himself.

Go into today remembering that God gives the manifestation of the supernatural to confirm your witness of Christ. Spiritual gifts are given to confirm the message of the gospel that your life and doctrine preach. Every minister should "Study to shew [himself] approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth." (2 Timothy 2:15).

Prayer: Ask the Lord to help you serve Him accurately. Ask the Lord to help you build on the foundation of Christ and build accurately so that your work will not be burnt away on judgment day (see 1 Corinthians 3:13-15).

"Lord, help me that on that day, I will receive Your commendation, not Your rebuke. Amen."

Joseph's Bones

Genesis 50:24-25 (NET): Then Joseph said to his brothers, “I am about to die. But God will surely come to you and lead you up from this land to the land He swore on oath to give to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.” Joseph made the sons of Israel swear an oath. He said, “God will surely come to you. Then you must carry my bones up from this place.”

There is an assurance that God's word must birth in you, an assurance so strong that the reality of His promises becomes more real than anything else. This is God's desire for every believer.

Joseph had attained royalty in Egypt, but he never lost sight of God's promise. He told his brethren, "Surely God will come. God will lead you out of this land, and God will lead you into the land He promised to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob."

Anyone can follow when physical evidence abounds—the Israelites who perished in the wilderness are proof of that. They ate manna, ate quails, saw the Red Sea part, and walked on dry land in the middle of the sea, yet they never truly believed God.

Not so with Joseph. He basically said to them, "God will do what He said He will do. To show how much I believe that, take my body with you when you leave here."

Make the meditation of God's word of utmost importance. Have a posture of mind that receives God's word as an immutable revelation and not just some divine opinion. Build yourself on your most holy faith. Then you will take God's word as truth.

A man who sees God's word as truth will order his life according to God's word. The voice of God, as spoken by the Word, will be sharp and clear in his heart, even in the midst of the deafening din of this world's counsel.

Are you ordering your life according to God's word, or are you cowering to this world's counsel? Abide in God and let the word of Christ dwell in you richly.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, help me order my life according to Your truth and be fruitful in all things. Amen.

Hebrews 2:5 (KJV) For unto the angels hath he not put in subjection the world to come, whereof we speak.

After Oyemade told his brethren about the threats from the people who wanted him to join their secret cults, they prayed together and agreed that he was to continue with the political race. He was thinking of leaving the race before because he understood that we believers would still reign over this earth when the Lord returns, but when it became clearer that his major opponent was an antichrist liberal whose agenda was to implement certain antichrist liberal policies, he was emboldened to continue in the race. Two months to the election, he was having a prayer walk in his compound at night when someone appeared to him through the back fence wall. Oyemade noticed that the man that appeared to him was surprised that he wasn't afraid but rather spoke in tongues and commanded him to get out of his compound. Apparently, the man came to scare him out of the race, but Oyemade didn't give the man the benefit of even speaking before he exercised authority over him—he vanished in terror.

In spite of the opposition from the kingdom of darkness, Oyemade won the election and was able to stifle the tide of antichrist liberal policies in his city.

The reason Oyemade could win that election against the will of the prince of this world (and his principalities) was because he too was a functional prince in God's eternal kingdom and he used the superior authority of the Kingdom to conquer on the earth. Every true believer is a prince in God's kingdom, but many are not functioning in their capacity because of spiritual ignorance and laziness.

Many believers who get to the high places in this world and become overpowered fail because they do not surround themselves with the right people and the right systems. A believer representing Christ in the high places of this world (media and entertainment, big business, government, politics, etc.) must be as committed to prayer and the Word as an apostle at the forefront of missionary work in hostile places.

Daniel is a good example. He was so committed to prayer (see Daniel 6:10) that even his enemies took notice. David is another good example of a man that succeeded in fulfilling God's purposes in the high places of this world. He too was a man committed to prayer and the Word. He prayed in the evening, morning, and afternoon every day (Psalm 55:17). He prayed and meditated on God's Word at night (Psalm 119:148). He had men of God around him who were not dazzled by his earthly greatness. Nathan could bring a message of stern rebuke from the Lord to King David and he would repent (see 2 Samuel 12:1-14).

Those who would be witnesses for Christ in the high places of this world must realize that they are there for God's kingdom agenda, not for themselves. They must rid themselves of the love of money and always remember that they have the backing of God's eternal government that rules over everything.

Prayer: Lord, give me the strength to stand for you in the high places of this world. Amen.

Hebrews 2:5 (KJV) For unto the angels hath he not put in subjection the world to come, whereof we speak.

Oyemade was quite sure that he had his political game plan perfectly worked out. It was going to be easy for him to get elected as mayor of the city, even though he was a minority. As the election day was getting closer, and it was becoming clearer and clearer that Oyemade's party was going to win the election, Oyemade started getting strange invitations from people he never knew existed. Because the mayoral seat in his city was very important (his city was so strategic and important), everyone was interested in who sat on that seat. Oyemade started getting veiled threats. He started getting invitations to join "powerful" secret societies. One of his closest allies told him that "boss if you don't join them, they won't let you win this election".

The aspiration for such a great political office made it clearer to Oyemade and his brethren that indeed, the systems of this current world are ruled by Satan the prince of this world (see John 14:30, 1 John 5:19, Ephesians 6:12, 2 Corinthians 4:4).

In this current world order, if you go high enough in most systems, you would interface with the devil. He is the ruler of this present world. The only people that can truly contend his authority on this earth are the sons of God: believers in Christ Jesus who are no longer [spiritual] babes but sons. They can contend territorial authority out of the hand of the prince of this world because their Lord has received 'all authority in heaven and on earth' (see Matthew 28:18).

This current world system is under the subjection of angels. The prince of this world (Satan) is an angel (a fallen angel), and so are his principalities that rule territories in this present world. But from today's verse, we see that this will not be the case in the world to come.

One very important component of the gospel message we preach is the second coming of Jesus, the resurrection of the dead, and the coming rule and reign of Christ (with the saints) over the earth, and over all things (see 1 Corinthians 15, 6:1-3, Philippians 3:20, Revelations 21:7).

This current world system is in its last days (see Hebrews 1:1-2, Acts 2:17). The devil knows that his time is short and that all authority has now been given to Jesus who will return and take over the governments of this earth, so he is more desperate than ever. The kingdom of this world will literally become the kingdom of our God and of His Christ, and we [His saints] shall reign on the earth (Revelation 5:10, 11:15, 20:4).

Go into today remembering that the world [order] to come will not be under the subjection of angels but under the subjection of man, ruled by the man Jesus Christ. With this sure expectation in your heart, walk in this present world with the authority of Christ and remember to lay for yourself treasure that will have value in the worlds to come (Matthew 6:19-21).

Prayer: Lord, help me walk in the fullness of your plan for my life. Deliver me from the distractions of this present world that is passing away and help me fulfill your plan for my life. Amen.

What the Gospel Does

Broadcast 4085

Hebrews 2:3-4 (NKJV) how shall we escape if we neglect so great a salvation, which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed to us by those who heard Him, 4 God also bearing witness both with signs and wonders, with various miracles, and gifts of the Holy Spirit, according to His own will?

Suzanne had a hard time discerning false prophets from true ones. She observed that some of the false prophets had become very smart by embracing 'holiness' doctrines. But she had a personal encounter with one of such holiness preachers and realized he was as greedy and filthy as the rest. She also realized that most of the false prophets were not interested in winning souls for the Lord, they were only interested in the money.

We can see from today's Bible verses that salvation was first preached by the Lord Jesus Himself, and was confirmed to us by those who heard Him (His disciples who echoed His gospel). In Matthew 9:35 and Luke 8:1, we see that the Lord Jesus went to different towns and villages teaching and preaching the Gospel of the Kingdom. We also see that His disciples did the same. Many wonder what gospel message Jesus and the Apostles preached since Jesus was not yet crucified? Well, Jesus preached the message of salvation. What makes a person receive eternal salvation is believing that Jesus is Lord (the Christ of God, the Messiah). Even before Jesus died on the cross, people were being saved through believing in Him. We see in Luke 19:9 that Jesus said salvation had come to the house of Zacchaeus [because he believed in Him].

Before and after His death and resurrection, believing that Jesus is Lord was the key to salvation. The resurrection was God's token proof that Jesus is Lord. The Jews crucified Him because He said He was the Christ (the Son of God, the King of the Jews). But God raised Him up on the third day as proof that He is indeed the Christ (Lord, Anointed One, the Messiah). The gospel we preach today now includes this vital truth—that God raised Jesus from the dead (see Romans 10:9).

In John 4, we are given a rare peek into the content of the gospel message that Jesus preached while He walked the streets of Israel. We see Jesus preaching to the Samaritan woman, and their conversation headed up to Him revealing to her that He is the Messiah (see John 4:25-26). The woman believed in Him and even invited others to come and see the Christ (see John 4:29).

Whether then, or when the Apostles preached, or today, the gospel message has been about bringing people to receive the Lordship of Christ Jesus. People who receive the gospel live under the Lordship of Christ. That's why they repent of their old ways that do not align with life under Christ's government.

Go into today remembering that God confirms His gospel with signs and wonders, miracles and gifts of the Spirit. The next time you want to discern whether a prophet is false or not, look at the fruits of his ministry (Matthew 7:16). Is he raising people whose allegiance is to Christ (this shows by their lives of submission to the Lordship of Christ) or is he raising people whose true allegiance is to him and to mammon?

Prayer: Heavenly Father, please help me be a true minister of Your salvation. Stretch out Your hand to confirm Your word in my life with signs and wonders, miracles, and gifts of the Spirit. In Jesus' name. Amen.

Love not the world

Broadcast 4084

1 John 2:15-17 (KJV) Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.
Ada believed that she loved God, but she realized that she didn't have as robust a relationship with the Lord as she needed to. She had seen her friend Linda pray simple prayers and receive instant answers from the Lord. She saw how Linda had peace in spite of any situation because of her relationship with the Lord. Ada knew that she did not have this. She later realized that even though she claimed to love the Lord, she still loved the world so much. This was the reason it appeared as though she was not known by God.

One of the many advantages of loving God is that you will be known by God (see 1 Corinthians 8:3). Of course, God knows everyone, but what 1 Corinthians 8:3 is talking about is what Linda had that Ada did not have. Some people have the Lord's ear, but most people do not. The secret is loving God.

It is impossible to love God and love the world at the same time. You can only deceive yourself that you love God if you still love the world because love for the world would always make you do things that show that you don't truly love God. A person who loves the world would love the things that are in the world. They include lust (lust of the flesh), greed (lust of the eyes), and pride (pride of life).

If a person loves lust, he would find that he would regularly disobey the Lord in that area. Ada had a boyfriend who would come and spend the weekend with her at least once every month. She knew this was wrong because she knew God did not approve, but she still loved her lust (a thing in the world).

For some, their number one pursuit in this life is material things and money. This lust motivates even their prayer discipline and spiritual practices. They do not realize that a person who truly loves God has God's kingdom as his first priority. Wealth and other things become additions to facilitate his kingdom assignment; they never become the priority of a person who truly loves God.

Pride of life is the reason people compare themselves with others and have 'sleepless nights' because they too want to be seen as successful. Living that way is too much of a burden for the soul of a man who would be productive in God's kingdom.

Go into today remembering that the love of the Father and the love of the world cannot exist together in any human heart. Ask the Holy Spirit to search you and expunge from your heart every love for the world and the things therein.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, please help me to love you and enjoy a robust relationship with you. In Jesus' name. Amen.

The Supernatural Dimension

1 Corinthians 12:1 (WEB) Now concerning spiritual things, brothers, I don’t want you to be ignorant.

Dean had become a grandmaster in the occult. He gave himself so much to the occult because he wanted power. He thought he had power until one prayerful widow moved next door to him within the same apartment.

This woman had more power than Dean had ever seen. She was a real prayer warrior. Many times she prayed in the night, and Dean saw strange things like powerful angels whose presence terrified the demons that normally empowered him. Because she was his next-door neighbor and her presence and prayers kept terrifying and subduing him, he eventually surrendered to Christ because of her influence.

This woman could lead Dean to the Lord and effectively disciple him because she was not ignorant concerning the things of the spirit and the supernatural dimension of the faith. The first night she slept in that apartment, she discerned who Dean was in the spirit, and from then on she intentionally demobilized him spiritually. That was what ultimately led him to salvation.

She would have never been able to lead a man like Dean to the Lord if she was not exposed to the supernatural and prophetic dimension of her walk with the Lord. Revelations, spiritual gifts, angelic encounters, etc., were not strange to her.

Go into today remembering that you are more effective in life and ministry when you are not ignorant concerning spiritual things.

Prayer: Ask the Lord to guide you into all truth so that you may experience the supernatural and power dimension of His kingdom. Amen.

Praying the Will of God

1 John 5:14 (ESV) And this is the confidence that we have toward him, that if we ask anything according to his will he hears us.

Praise was discipled by Precious and they became very close. As time passed, Praise observed that whenever Precious prayed, she received answers. Unlike her, Precious did not have to pray and fast all the time to solve a problem. She simply mentioned it to her Heavenly Father or would speak to the situation, and she always got results. When she asked Precious for the secret to this success in prayers, Precious responded: “I have learned to know and pray the will of God.”

The effectiveness of prayer is not always in how long we pray, it is not even in how pressing the need is, nor is it in how sincerely we are asking. Prayer becomes effective when God's will [that we know] becomes the basis of our prayer. Note that His will is expressed in His word.

All that you will ever need was known to God, provided by Him, and packaged in His will long before your arrival (birth) here on earth. Not living the will of God is living a failure. Jesus taught us to pray that “your (God) will be done on earth as it is in heaven.“ This should be the fulcrum of all our prayers. That was how Jesus prayed (see Matt 26:39).

Go into today determined to spend your time and energy seeking to always walk in God's will. I recommend that you read the devotionals titled 'Discerning the Will of God' again. Find out what God already said concerning your needs and ask God from that standpoint. I guarantee you will become more effective.

Prayer: Father, help me always walk in Your will. Amen.

Titus 2:11-13 (NET) For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation to all people. It trains us to reject godless ways and worldly desires and to live self-controlled, upright, and godly lives in the present age, as we wait for the happy fulfillment of our hope in the glorious appearing of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ.

After Byrum believed in the Lord Jesus, he was baptized in the Holy Ghost, and as a result, was empowered by the Spirit to overcome his addictions and live a godly life. This happened because he submitted to the instructions of righteousness given to him by his pastor. He had to change his apartment because his neighbor was his drug dealer, he had to leave his old friends and totally disconnect from his old way of living. He was filled with the Spirit and was taught to stay filled. In this way, his body was empowered by the indwelling Holy Spirit (Romans 8:11) and he could cope with the withdrawal from the drugs. He spent a lot of time praying and singing in the Spirit because he needed to stay filled with the Spirit. The infilling of the Holy Spirit affects even our mortal bodies.

One of the things the grace of God would teach us is that "bad company corrupts good character" (1 Corinthians 15:33). Those who are taught by grace become very particular about the company they keep. They guard their hearts with all diligence by guarding the information they feed into it.

We saw yesterday that the grace of God trains us or teaches us how to reject ungodly ways and fleshly lusts. There are very practical things we must be willing to do in keeping with the teaching of grace. We must be willing to forsake our worldly ways and deny the flesh.

Go into today remembering that as a student of grace, you have to be willing to obey the demands of God's kingdom for your life. This is the only way to allow the divine life to excel over the old life.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, please lead me to your green pastures and help me be fed and led by your living word. Help me to live a godly and fruitful life. In Jesus' name.

When Byron accepted the Lord Jesus, he was a drug addict who had been to rehab twice. He didn't believe it was possible for him to overcome his addiction to drugs until he came in contact with the grace of God.

After accepting the gospel, he realized that he was now enrolled in God's educational system. Through the power of the indwelling Holy Spirit and the ministry of the Word, he was trained to reject all his previous godless ways and to now live a self-controlled godly life. Because he was a medical doctor, he understood the physiological ramifications of his addiction, so he knew that it was the power of God that made it possible for him to be trained out of his addictions into a godly life.

Many believers talk a lot about grace but experience too little of it because they do not realize that grace empowers us to overcome sin through a training or educational process administered by the Holy Spirit and the ministry of the Word. Believers who give very little time to the learning of the Word will experience very little grace in their lives.

Today's Bible verses show us that the grace of God trains or teaches us how to reject ungodly ways and fleshly lusts; grace trains us how to live godly lives in this present world. But you cannot isolate all these from the backdrop of our blessed hope as believers. This hope is the expectation of the glory that will be revealed in us when the Lord appears. This expectation keeps us pure as we await the appearing of our God and Savior Jesus Christ (see 1 John 3:3).

Go into today remembering that the grace of God is appropriated in your life through submission to discipleship and learning. Every believer is a disciple. The word disciple means follower, student, or apprentice. Every believer in Christ is a student of grace.

Prayer: Lord, please help me know greater measures of your grace daily. Amen.
