Hebrews 6:1-2 (KJV): "Therefore leaving the principles of the doctrine of Christ, let us go on unto perfection; not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works, and of faith toward God, of the doctrine of baptisms, and of laying on of hands, and of resurrection of the dead, and of eternal judgment."
Patrick had a very unstable spiritual life. One day he would be fervent in his faith, and the next day he would be cold. He could not recall a single year where his spiritual life was stable for even six months. Despite his desire to serve the Lord and fulfill his divine purpose, he became deeply troubled because, despite all his efforts—fasting and praying with tears—his spiritual life continued to swing like a pendulum, hot one day, cold the next.

Many believers, like Patrick, experience similar struggles, and it isn’t entirely their fault. The root of the problem is often a faulty foundation. Just as with any building, the foundation of your Christian doctrine determines how stable your spiritual life will be. Our Lord Jesus likened those who build their lives according to His Word to a wise man who built his house on a rock-solid foundation (see Matthew 7:24-27). The Apostle Paul referred to believers in Corinth as God’s building (1 Corinthians 3:9). He also described himself as a wise master builder who laid the foundation (1 Corinthians 3:10). Paul understood that his primary role was to establish the foundation of Christian doctrine.

In today’s scripture, we see six components that form the foundation of Christian doctrine. If a believer lacks understanding in any of these areas, they have a faulty foundation, which may lead to cracks and instability in their spiritual life.

Repentance from dead works is a crucial element of this foundation. Some modern preachers teach that repentance is merely a change of mind toward God, without necessarily impacting one’s conduct. This is only half true. There is indeed repentance toward God, but as today's scripture points out, there is also "repentance from dead works." If a person claims to believe in God but does not forsake sinful ways, they have not truly believed.

As you go about your day, remember that if the foundations are destroyed, what can the righteous do? Many believers, who have been declared righteous because of their faith in Christ, struggle spiritually due to a faulty foundation.

Prayer: Lord, in this season, please reinforce the spiritual foundations of many believers. Amen.
