Ephesians 4:1-3 (NET): "I, therefore, the prisoner for the Lord, urge you to live worthily of the calling with which you have been called, with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love, making every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace."
Since the day Colins and Candy got married, they frequently had bitter quarrels and misunderstandings. Colins had a picture-perfect idea of what his ideal wife should be like, but after marrying Candy, he was disappointed that she didn’t meet his expectations. Candy, on the other hand, wanted Colins to be the perfect gentleman she could control, but he resisted her efforts. Their situation was even more disheartening because they were both leaders in the church, yet they couldn’t seem to live in peace.
After seeking marriage counseling with their pastor, they realized that the root of their problems was pride and a lack of willingness to bear with one another in love. Once they acknowledged their pride and chose to humble themselves, their marriage began to thrive.
One of the saddest things to witness is division and conflict in Christian homes or fellowships. Maintaining peace often requires intentional effort. A believer who is quarrelsome and divisive is not living in a manner worthy of their calling in Christ.
How do believers live worthily? We do so by making every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace. To maintain peace and unity, we must be patient and willing to bear with others in love. This is only possible when we are humble and gentle. A proud person cannot achieve this.
As you go into today, remember that walking in a manner worthy of the Lord enables you to experience His glorious power and freedom. Humility and gentleness are essential traits of those who live in a way that pleases the Lord.
Prayer: Lord, help me walk in a manner worthy of my calling in You and to please You in all things. Amen.
