Matthew 7:22-23 (KJV): "Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity."
LeBron wasn’t sure if Prophet Uli was a true man of God because of his unusual way of demonstrating the power of God. He asked his father, a seasoned believer, for advice on how to discern if Uli was legitimate. His father gave him simple counsel: Watch Uli closely and study his driving force. Does Uli love righteousness and hate iniquity? Is his ministry driven by a desire for fame or money, or by a genuine desire to raise disciples of Jesus?
It didn’t take long for LeBron to discern that Uli was more interested in raising money than disciples of Jesus. He also discovered that Uli, despite working miracles, was a worker of iniquity.
One of the most frightening aspects of deception is that those who are deceived often don’t realize it. There are many who believe they belong to Jesus, but in reality, they do not—they’ve been misled.
The people the Lord refers to in today’s scripture truly believed they belonged to Him. They performed miracles in His name, but the reality is they were never in the faith. I believe they were able to perform miracles because the name of Jesus has unlimited credit; people can draw from it through faith. However, that doesn’t mean they belong to Him. Jesus says that those who belong to Him are not just those who cry, “Lord, Lord,” but those who do the will of His Father in heaven (see Matthew 7:21).
How then can we be sure we truly belong to Christ and avoid being deceived, especially since those who are deceived also believe they belong to Him?
Jesus gives us the answer in today’s scripture: those who were rejected were workers of iniquity. This is the ultimate test to discern whether you are truly in the faith. You may perform miracles in His name, but if you are still a worker of iniquity, it’s proof that you do not belong to Him.
Apostle Paul echoes this truth in 2 Timothy 2:19: "Nevertheless the foundation of God standeth sure, having this seal, The Lord knoweth them that are his. And, let every one that nameth the name of Christ depart from iniquity."
Go into today knowing that if you truly belong to Christ, you will avoid all known iniquity. You cannot claim to belong to Christ while continuing to condone what you know He detests. The ultimate seal of belonging to Christ is departing from iniquity. This doesn’t mean you won’t make mistakes, but it means you cannot continue in known sin and still claim to belong to Christ.
