Jude 1:4 (NET) "For certain men have secretly slipped in among you – men who long ago were marked out for the condemnation I am about to describe – ungodly men who have turned the grace of our God into a license for evil and who deny our only Master and Lord, Jesus Christ."A preacher traveled a long distance to speak at a church that had invited him. While resting in his motel room, he heard a knock at the door. To his surprise, it was a desperate prostitute who saw him as a potential client. He felt great pity for her and kindly informed her that he wasn’t interested. As she left, he thought, "If only this precious one could receive the gospel and be set free."
The next day, when he arrived at the church, he was shocked to find the same prostitute as one of the choir's lead singers. Confused, he inquired about her and learned that some church leaders were aware of her actions but chose to overlook them. Their reasoning? "After all, we are under grace. It’s not by works, but by grace."
This church and its leaders had dangerously misunderstood the grace of God, treating it as a license to sin. They were in great spiritual peril, yet they didn’t realize it.
When God's grace is not properly understood, it can be misused as an excuse for sinful behavior by those who do not love righteousness (Romans 6:1-2). However, when truly understood, God’s grace is the most powerful force against sin in the life of a believer (Romans 6:14). Grace is not permission to continue in sin but the means by which we are empowered to live above sin.
Some mistake grace for a license because righteousness under grace does not depend on works or rules but is received as a gift and appropriated by faith. This faith helps the believer understand that they are accepted by God, not because of their actions but because of the righteousness of Jesus. Living from this standpoint of faith is the key to walking in true righteousness, which has dominion over sin.
Go into today remembering that one of the devil's strategies is to deceive believers into turning God's grace into a license for sin. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.
Confession:
Sin has no dominion over me. I walk in grace, not under condemnation. Hallelujah!
