Acts 2:38 (NET) Peter said to them, “Repent, and each one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.Terron was not sure why he had not received the gift of the Holy Spirit even though he was a Christian and had been in church all his life.
He started getting concerned when his cousin, who used to be a thug, believed and received the baptism of the Holy Spirit. He could see the transformation in Dequan’s life and he could tell that this transformation was because of the power of the Holy Spirit. Dequan could now also speak in tongues and pray in the Holy Spirit. Terron knew this was missing in his life — the gift of the Holy Spirit.
The gift of the Holy Spirit is received when people believe the gospel, repent, and are baptized into the Lord Jesus. Our sins are forgiven because we are now included in Christ and thus are partakers of His righteousness.
One of the reasons the Holy Spirit is given to us is that He might help us in our journey of sanctification. He comes to make us Holy; guiding us into all truth and filling our hearts with His peace and assurance of sonship. He is the one who helps us understand the word of God so we might come to the knowledge of God's truth. This knowledge brings us to the point of liberty from the sinful nature and participation in the divine life.
Go into today remembering that the Holy Spirit is given to those who have repented and are baptized in Christ. This means they have handed over the government of their lives to Christ and intend to so live. The Lord gives such people the Holy Spirit to empower and help them live as sons of God.
Have you handed over the government of your life to Christ or are you still the Lord of your life? This is one of the most important questions to answer if you intend to live a spirit-filled life.
