1 Corinthians 10:21 (KJV) “Ye cannot drink the cup of the Lord, and the cup of devils: ye cannot be partakers of the Lord's table, and of the table of devils.”I recall how meal times in boarding school could provoke anxiety; there was always a chance of missing out on a meal. Each student was assigned a table, and we had to follow a strict schedule. Failure to comply—whether by being late or bringing the wrong cutlery—could mean going hungry for the day.
In a similar way, idolatry is a clear misstep for believers who claim faith but participate in the “table of devils” through activities like using charms, occultism, or soothsaying. These overt practices, along with more subtle ones, put one at risk of missing out on God’s kingdom (see 1 Cor. 6:9-10; Gal. 5:19-21; Eph. 5:5-7).
In John 6:41, 48, 51, and 53-58, Christ unmistakably calls His flesh (the Word) food and His blood drink, which we must partake in to have life. Thus, through salvation and meditating on His Word, we dine at the Lord's table. In contrast, consuming content that appeals to sin and sensuality (like pornography) is equivalent to eating from the table of devils.
As you go into today, commit to partaking continually from the Lord's table, staying nourished on the Word even amidst adversity or doubt. In doing so, may God’s overflowing goodness and mercy follow you always (Ps. 23:5-6).
Prayer: Lord, help me to feed only from Your table and grow in You. Amen.
