Romans 13:14 (KJV) But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to gratify its desires.

Walking in the Spirit or walking in the flesh is a choice every believer must make daily. God’s will for His children is that they walk in the Spirit, growing in the divine nature and deepening their intimacy with Him. He has supplied the grace to do this through the indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit. However, the devil's strategy is to lure believers into walking in the flesh, leading them into spiritual weakness, vulnerability to his schemes, and ultimately spiritual death.

How Do People Walk in the Flesh?
People walk in the flesh when they allow their sinful nature to control their actions, yielding to the desires of the flesh rather than the Spirit. Galatians 5:19-21 clearly outlines the works of the flesh:
“When you follow the desires of your sinful nature, the results are very clear: sexual immorality, impurity, lustful pleasures, idolatry, sorcery, hostility, quarreling, jealousy, outbursts of anger, selfish ambition, dissension, division, envy, drunkenness, wild parties, and other sins like these. Let me tell you again, as I have before, that anyone living that sort of life will not inherit the Kingdom of God.”

When believers yield to these works of the flesh, they stifle their spiritual growth and put themselves at risk of spiritual death (see Romans 8:13).

How to Walk in the Spirit
Walking in the Spirit requires intentionality. Here are practical steps:

  1. Daily Surrender: Start your day by committing to God and asking for the guidance of the Holy Spirit.
  2. Feed Your Spirit: Regularly study God’s Word and meditate on it. The Word renews your mind and strengthens your spirit (Romans 12:2).
  3. Guard Your Heart: Be mindful of what you expose yourself to—conversations, media, or environments that may provoke the desires of the flesh (Proverbs 4:23).
  4. Be Prayerful: Continually commune with God in prayer. Prayer empowers you to overcome temptations and walk victoriously.
  5. Stay Accountable: Surround yourself with fellow believers who encourage you to grow spiritually and hold you accountable.

Go into today remembering that to “put on the Lord Jesus Christ” is to live in constant awareness of His presence, allowing His character and Spirit to shape your thoughts and actions. Ask the Lord for grace to overcome temptations and walk in victory over the flesh.

Prayer: Lord, help me to walk in the Spirit and not gratify the desires of the flesh. Empower me daily to put on Christ and live in alignment with Your will. Amen.
