Matthew 6:7-8 (NKJV) "And when you pray, do not use vain repetitions as the heathen do. For they think that they will be heard for their many words. Therefore do not be like them. For your Father knows the things you have need of before you ask Him."

Azubike faced a significant challenge in his business. He prayed earnestly for wisdom and help from the Lord. After his initial prayer, he felt the need to keep praying about the matter but hesitated. He misunderstood Jesus’ teaching in today’s text and thought it meant he should not pray about the same issue more than once.

Thankfully, Azubike had the habit of studying the Bible. One day, he read Luke 18, where Jesus taught the parable of the persistent widow, emphasizing the importance of persistent prayer. Realizing this, Azubike continued praying about his challenge until he received the breakthrough he sought.

Repetition in prayer is not forbidden; what Jesus warns against is vain repetition. For example, Jesus Himself repeated His prayer in the garden of Gethsemane (Matthew 26:42-44), and Elijah prayed seven times for rain to return (1 Kings 18:42-44). The key is that these prayers were purposeful and centered on God’s will.

Vain prayers, like those of the Gentiles, are self-centered and focused solely on material needs. In contrast, believers are called to pray prayers that prioritize God’s kingdom and His righteousness (Matthew 6:33). When our prayers align with God’s will, they become powerful and effective.

Go into today asking the Lord to grant you the wisdom to pray wisely and persistently, always seeking His will above all (James 4:3).

Prayer:
Lord, teach me to pray prayers that align with Your kingdom and righteousness. Help me to persevere in prayer, trusting in Your perfect timing and will. Amen.
