Phillip was thrilled to attend a reunion party organized for alumni of his university. It was a chance to reconnect with old friends and reminisce about the past. As the night unfolded, he found himself surrounded by familiar faces, including a few of his old girlfriends and companions from his wild campus days.
Back in his university years, Phillip was far from godly. He lived recklessly, indulging in immorality, and took pride in leading a carefree, ungodly life. But all of that had changed after he encountered Christ three years after graduation. Now, Phillip was a transformed man, walking in the light of God's grace and truth.
At the party, his old friends were overjoyed to see him and quickly engaged him in conversations. Unfortunately, many of these conversations were filled with crude jokes, gossip, and unwholesome reminiscing about their wild escapades. Phillip tried to steer the discussions in a better direction, but his friends didn’t understand the depth of the change in his life.
When he left the party, Phillip felt defiled. His heart and mind were burdened with unclean thoughts he hadn’t wrestled with in years. It was as if being in that environment had stirred up old, buried struggles.
Back home, Phillip did the only thing he knew could cleanse his heart—he opened his Bible and began to read. As he immersed himself in the Word, he felt an undeniable renewal in his spirit. The thoughts that had weighed him down were washed away, replaced by peace and a renewed sense of God’s presence. He realized afresh the power of God’s Word to sanctify and restore his soul (see Ps 23:3).
The Bible teaches us in Ephesians 5:26 that Christ sanctifies His Church through the washing of water by the Word. This aligns with John 17:17, where Jesus prayed that we would be sanctified through the truth of God's Word. It is through abiding in the Word that we experience continuous cleansing and renewal.
Go into today remembering that the Word of God is the spiritual water that purifies and sanctifies your soul.
Prayer: Lord, help me abide in Your Word always, and let it cleanse and renew me daily. Amen.
