1 Corinthians 1:4-5 (DARBY)"I thank my God always about you, in respect of the grace of God given to you in Christ Jesus; that in everything ye have been enriched in him, in all word [of doctrine], and all knowledge."The church in Corinth was richly blessed in every way. They excelled in spiritual gifts, lacking nothing and standing out among other churches (1 Corinthians 1:7). They experienced remarkable demonstrations of God's power, which brought growth and admiration in their city. Materially, they prospered through the grace of God (1 Corinthians 4:8). While the Apostle Paul celebrated these blessings, he was also concerned that they might focus too much on these external evidences and neglect the deeper, weightier matters of God’s kingdom.
The secret of their enrichment was their grounding in doctrine and knowledge. Paul highlighted this as the foundation of their success (see the Bible text above). With skilled teachers like Apollos, the Corinthians were well-equipped to understand and apply the riches of Christ through faith. As Scripture teaches, "Faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God" (Romans 10:17).
Whenever you see Christians walking in the fullness of God’s grace and enjoying the riches of Christ’s liberty, it is often because they have been well-taught in doctrine and have cultivated a hunger for God’s Word. On the other hand, Christians who neglect sound teaching and learning often experience spiritual poverty, oppression, and lack, which is not God’s will for His children.
Go into today remembering that every Christian is a disciple, and every disciple is a lifelong student of Christ. We are called to continually learn and grow in the Word, never graduating from the school of the Spirit.
Prayer: Lord, help me to devote myself to the ministry of the Word and prayer. Strengthen my desire to grow in Your truth and walk in the fullness of Your grace. Amen.
