1 Peter 4:11 (NASB) "Whoever speaks is to do so as one who is speaking actual words of God; whoever serves is to do so as one who is serving by the strength which God supplies; so that in all things God may be glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom belongs the glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen."Efosa had been looking forward to Saturday, but not anymore. Two months ago, he had received a letter of invitation to be a guest minister at the Singles Weekend of Upward Flight Campus Fellowship. He was to speak on the topic “Handle My Heart with Care.” He was an alumnus of the fellowship and knew that the Singles Weekend was usually a lighthearted variety program filled with fun activities like games and more. And there lay his worry.
You see, Efosa had been praying and preparing for the program ever since he received the invitation. His notes were ready a month after. The message was going to be lighthearted, emphasizing loving consideration for the needs of others generally, and even more so in relationships. It was filled with cheerful anecdotes laced with humor. However, in the last two weeks, Efosa had felt a strong impression from the Holy Spirit that suggested God would have him take a completely different direction—one that was quite sober and somber.
Efosa struggled with the thoughts, prayed about them, and yet the impression only grew stronger. His concern was that he didn’t want to spoil the fun of the Singles Weekend, especially since his original message was a godly one with balanced substance and emphasis.
Saturday came, and Efosa was still struggling with these thoughts when it was time for him to speak. He was introduced by the Fellowship President, and as he stepped forward, he picked up the microphone, dropped his notes and Bible on the lectern, prayed, and began to speak… for God.
You see, it is a privilege of inestimable value to be given the opportunity to speak for God—and that is what we are called to do as ministers of God. The gravity of this responsibility does not diminish with frequency. From our text today, we are instructed and charged to always discharge this duty as one speaking for God and speaking the very words of God, for that is what glorifies Him.
You might have a word for every occasion, but don’t run off with it just yet. Check with the Lord to know what He wants to say in every situation, so you don’t betray the trust of the Divine by speaking your own words—even if they seem ‘good’—instead of speaking God’s word.
Go into today with a sense of gratitude and dependence on the wisdom and power of God.
