The Call

1 Corinthians 4:9 (NET) For, I think, God has exhibited us apostles last of all, as men condemned to die, because we have become a spectacle to the world, both to angels and to people.

When Collins first felt the call to serve the Lord, he naturally aspired to reach the highest level of service. Having spent some time in church, he observed that many viewed the office of the apostle as the most prestigious in the body of Christ. Inspired by this, he desired to be an apostle himself. As his commitment and dedication to his local church grew, he was soon ordained as a minister. Yet, in his heart, he still longed to be called an apostle.

One morning, as he was studying the Word of God, he came across today’s verse. He read it over and over, and the reality of it deeply impacted him. From that moment, his perspective on becoming an apostle began to shift.

The office of apostle, prophet, evangelist, pastor, or teacher is not something a person decides for themselves. These roles are ordained by God before a person is even born (see Galatians 1:15, Jeremiah 1:5). The key question isn’t whether we can choose the role, but whether we will walk in the calling God has placed on our lives. Many are called, but few are chosen, and the difference lies in faithfulness (Revelation 17:14). God does not entrust much to the unfaithful (see Luke 16:10).

I don’t believe that everyone called to be an apostle must necessarily die for their faith—after all, the Apostle John did not face martyrdom. However, I do believe that to walk effectively in any calling, one must adopt the mindset of an apostle: a heart willing to lay down everything—perhaps even life itself—for the sake of the gospel (see Luke 14:26, Revelation 12:11).

Prayer:
Lord, help me fulfill the call You have placed on my life. May I be faithful in all things, trusting You with the path You’ve set before me. This is the most important thing in life.
