Luke 16:13; 12:34 (KJV): "No servant can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon… For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also."
When Satan first appeared to mankind, he came as a serpent, one of the beasts of the field. This subtle approach made it easier for man to engage with him, which ultimately led to the fall. Today, Satan employs the same subtlety but in a different guise—through mammon. His agenda remains unchanged: to lead people away from God.
What is Mammon?
In Luke 16:11, Jesus says:
"If therefore ye have not been faithful in the unrighteous mammon, who will commit to your trust the true riches?"
Mammon refers to earthly riches. On its own, wealth is not inherently evil, but in the hands of Satan, it becomes a destructive idol.
How Does Mammon Become a God?
Mammon becomes a god through unfaithfulness. According to Merriam-Webster, to be unfaithful is to be disloyal, unreliable, or untrustworthy. Breaking this down further, “un-” means lacking, and “faith” refers to trust. Therefore, unfaithfulness can be understood as a lack of trust in God.
When a person’s trust shifts from God to earthly riches, they make mammon their god. Without realizing it, many have turned from God, allowing Satan to dominate their lives through their relentless pursuit of wealth at the expense of their spiritual growth.
Reflection:
Where is your trust today? When you place your confidence in earthly riches rather than God, you empower Satan’s influence over your life.
Action Point:
Confess any unfaithfulness in your heart and make a conscious decision to trust God with your earthly resources. Be faithful with earthly riches by using them for God’s glory, and prioritize Him above all else.
Prayer:
Lord, I confess that at times my trust has shifted from You to earthly riches. I repent of this unfaithfulness and choose to put my trust in You alone. Help me to be a faithful steward of all You have given me, and let my heart always treasure You above all else. Amen.
