Exodus 3:7-8b (KJV) And the Lord said, I have surely seen the affliction of my people which are in Egypt, and have heard their cry by reason of their taskmasters; for I know their sorrows; and I am come down to deliver them out of the hand of the Egyptians.

A Sunday School story tells of a man of God who lived in an ancient city that was hit by a devastating flood. As the waters rose, he climbed to the top of the tallest mountain and prayed, “God, I am your servant—come and save me from this flood.”

Soon after, a rescue team arrived in a flying boat and called out, “Jump in!” But the man replied, “No, God will save me.”

As the water reached his knees, another team appeared with the same offer, but his response remained unchanged. Finally, as the water reached his waist, yet another team arrived, but again, he refused their help, saying, “God will save me.” Eventually, the water engulfed him, and he drowned.

When he got to heaven, he expressed his disappointment to God, saying, “Lord, I trusted you to save me, but you didn’t!” God replied, “I sent help three different times, but you turned it down.”

This story illustrates a vital truth: God often answers our prayers by sending help through people. However, the inability to recognize His provision can lead to unnecessary suffering.

When the Israelites cried out to God for deliverance from Egypt, He responded by sending Moses, not as a divine apparition, but as a man chosen and empowered to lead them out of bondage. Similarly, when Jesus came as the Messiah, many of the Israelites rejected Him because they could not discern their day of visitation (Luke 19:44).

Discerning God’s answers is just as important as praying for His help. Without this discernment, prayers can feel unending and fruitless, even when answers are already present.

Go into today trusting the Holy Spirit to sharpen your discernment so that you can recognize and receive God’s answers, no matter how they come.

Prayer:
Lord, thank You for always hearing my prayers. Help me to recognize and embrace the answers You send, even when they come in unexpected ways. Amen.
