Stay within what was written

1 Corinthians 4:6 (NET) "I have applied these things to myself and Apollos because of you, brothers and sisters, so that through us you may learn ‘not to go beyond what is written,’ so that none of you will be puffed up in favor of the one against the other."

Some time ago, I studied how some of the world's biggest cults and sects began. I discovered that many were started by individuals who were once part of the church but later deviated by interpreting Scripture beyond what was written, while also ignoring portions they found inconvenient. As a result, they became vulnerable to deception, allowing evil spirits to influence and facilitate the movements they led.

One of the greatest dangers a minister of God can face is the temptation to go beyond what is written in Scripture. Any encounter, revelation, or insight that cannot be backed by Scripture—or is contradicted by it—is dangerous for a believer, no matter how logical or appealing it may seem.

In 2 Corinthians 12:2-4, Apostle Paul described an encounter in Paradise and the third heaven but stated that the things he heard there were "unlawful to be uttered." What does this mean?

We know that God’s divine law is encoded in the Scriptures. Any truth, encounter, or teaching that cannot be properly supported by Scripture is unlawful for a servant of God to teach. If something cannot be expressed within the framework of God's written Word, it should not be uttered in ministry.

As you go about your day, remember that God has graciously given us both the Holy Spirit and the Holy Scriptures to guide us. In this dark and deceptive world, where many lose their way, His Word remains our sure foundation:

"Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path." – Psalm 119:105
